Banded 5/29/12 - Progression?

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to get some feedback on the progression of others diet. I was banded May 29, 2012 so I am 6 days post op. My doctors diet plan calls for 7 day Clear liquids, then 7 days full liquids plus Soups (assuming creamy type - soft). However, everything on his post-op plan is based around his brand of products (Protein drinks, soups, Vitamins, ect.) so it makes it much harder when I'm at a regular grocery store. I've asked for some comparison products but they have not been as helpful as I would like them to be :-(

Any feedback would be appreciated...

Can you google the doctor's products and then compare the nutritional values to store products? My doctor calls for whey Isolate (not all whey is created equal). I used Gold Standard 100% Whey-Double chocolate and Dymatize Nutrition Elite Gourmet vanilla. Try to stay under 120 cals (for just the powder) for at least 24 g of Protein, and less than 5 g of fat or carbs. Keep in mind if you make the shakes with milk that will add Protein and cals ( I used fat free milk).

For Full Liquids I liked pacific brand Tomato and sweet red pepper Soup (smooth). I also added Mrs Dash non salt chicken flavoring before heating which added great taste to the Soup. Premier brand ready to drink Protein Shakes are quite nice (160 cal, 30 g of Protein). Available at costco and Sams.

Thanks. I tried 1/2 cup of a very thin cream of potato today. I was so nervous I think it took me over 30 minutes to sip it. It went well...will not try anything else today. Anxious for my check up on Wednesday.

Please keep the advice coming.

On a very positive note, I am down 21 pounds in 13 days. (7 days Pre-op, 6 days post-op)

Hi there - I was banded 5/30 and on full liquids for a few more days. Here's what I'm allowed to have:

Protein shakes (at least 2, up to 4)

SF popsicles

SF Jello

skim milk

4 oz of light OJ, prune juice, or V8 juice

broth

"strained soups" with "no particles" - I have interpreted this to mean Tomato Soup, pacific brand creamy Tomato, V8 brand potato and leek Soup, and campbell's broccoli cheddar, which I emulsified with a hand-held blender. My instructions say the Soups should have no meat.

on day 9 post-op, I can add the following:

creamy soups (still no meat or chunks)

LF cottage cheese

baby food

pureed fruits and vegetables

then 3 days after that comes the pureed/mushy phase -

PS - I also have had some drinkable Organic Valley LF vanilla yogurt. My instructions say "any thin liquid you could drink with a straw, but don't use a straw - sit up to drink"

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
