Pre-Op Diet - South Beach Phase 1

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone-

So today is day one of my pre-op diet. The surgeon wants me on a strict South Beach phase 1 diet. So far I have had a 5 calorie Jello and some Water. I am not a good Breakfast eater, but I have some eggs boiling right now. Anyone ever had to follow this diet? If so, have any suggestions on some meal ideas? I do not want to eat tuna and chicken for every.single.meal!

Thanks!!

Hi Meg,

I've been on the SBD phase I a few times in my life. If you like eggs, I hard boil them, and take the yolks out and put some hummus, tuna fish, guacamole, in them. eggs have good Protein as all the other "stuffings" here. I did this after I was able to start eating solids post op with the lap band. It stays with you for hours.

lunch, was probably a boca burger with some salad, or tuna fish and a salad with oil & vinegar. dinner was mainly chicken, Chinese take out of steamed chicken/broccoli or steamed shrimp and broccoli or any other Chinese green veggies. Steamed.

Go on SBD online and you can get lots of ideas in their recipes. Last I knew you didn't have to pay to be a member. Good luck to you.

I have never done south beach. I would be careful to look for phase one however since you don't want to choose foods that are from different phases of the diet.

I have done the SBD and I really found that it was effective, the only thing that I didn't like about it was that no matter how much I ate of the healthy foods, I still felt as if something was lacking. I knew that I was full, I was just unsatisfied, but that is because I'm addicted to bread. It would be different if you hadn't have done the pre-op diet, but when I did the SBD the third day was the hardest because your body is going through withdrawls from sugar. It's crazy how you feel, I felt like a drug addict. But that only last about two days. After that you have a ton more energy and feel good. I recommend picking up the SBD cook book, it's worth the money because there is more variety then what you can just come up with in your head. Good luck!

I started SB Saturday the 2nd. I have been following it pretty strict, I have not lost not even an ounce of weight. I am so paranoid now I will not lose anything and they will do my surgery. YIKES

I would talk to your doctor. Most people see immediate weight loss

Talked to the Dr.'s office yesterday - she thinks it is due to TOM, which started yesterday. This morning I woke up and lost 3 lbs. whew...hopefully more to come.

I think you have to pay to get access to the SBD recipes and website tools. But it's worth every penny! Or go to the library and get their cookbooks. I loved the one that was Quick and Easy meals or something like that. It's the Gold cover. Great recipes!

Actually you don't need to be a member on SB. Just go on and pull up the recipes. I've done this and printed a lot of them out and made my own SB cookbook with tabs for all foods. It's amazing how many great recipes there are on there that one wouldn't even think about.

My husband & I have been banded this year. Since our surgeries were 8 weeks apart, it always seemed like someone was on a liquid diet or mushie for the most part. Now we're caught up and I look forward to start cooking real meals from my SB diet cookbook.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
