New To Forum...dr Thinks Possible Slipped Band...

Recommended Posts

Hello! I was banded in April of 2008. starting weight 267. things were going pretty good though I never seemed to find a happy medium. I have a 10cc band, and was losing great ,I got down to 199...in the process somehow things became too tight and I had a full unfill. I have since had 3 complete unfills. the last one 5wks ago. I was pbing-throwing up constantly, one day it would feel like my band was wide open and the next day complete restriction....just no consistancy. my Dr said he felt I had a slipped band and would unfill and see if it heals itself. he said he didnt want to do an upper GI to save me money, if we could just unfill and check back in 6wks. my question is how does a slipped band heal itself, is this possible? I am back up to 245lbs and very discouraged. I just want the band to work with me!!

If it is a small slip the stomach that has pushed itself up through the band can go back into place. Generally most Dr's will expect you to stick to a liquid diet for a period to facilitate this happening.

thank you for your response. one more ?...how will the dr know everything is good to go. The way it sounds is I am to go in and have a fill. he said we would probably start at 4cc. Does this seem like normal protocal? I only had to do liquids for 24hrs after the unfill.

Honestly, if you have had to be unfilled several times because of suspected slips... I would get an upper GI done. Your slip may be severe enough that it needs a surgical repair. Hard to know without the test.

I am sorry about the complication and regain. I have been there and understand the frustration. I hope you are able to figure things out and get back on track soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
