3 Years Post Op And Have Gained Back Most Of My Weight

Recommended Posts

I had lap band surgery on March 17th 2009. I lost about 20 lbs during the pre-op diet, then continued to lose weight right after surgery. For the first year I kept losing till i lost 100 lbs a year from surgery. After that i started having problems with the band. I have had a total of 27 adjustments and several ER visits due to vomiting up blood and at one point my band was in a bad position. My insurance will pay to have it removed but won't help pay for a revision to gastric bypass or the sleeve. The last upper GI showed it was in the right position so I went ahead and tried to get adjustments again. I have lost no weight and keep gaining. More frustrated than anything and have given up. I can't find the will power and disapline to go back to a liquid diet. What to do? Where do I start? Help!

I feel your pain. I was at 110 at a low and am now 155 as of this morning. Wow it even hurts to type that. I have had no problems with my band. Since I lost the weight I have choosen to keep my band very loose. That may be a mistake, something I'm still pondering. I don't have any easy answers and am curious as to what others have to say.

liquid diet for 24 hours, then soft foods, then get back on that damn horse! (sound of whip cracking)

Stay away from slider foods, and find a reason to be thin again. For, your kids? Your husband, boyfriend, family, or most of all, you?

OK, here's one that you don't hear often: Get back on the band program or you might not live very long? If that doesn't motivate someone then I don't have an answer either?

Heart disease, diabetes, stroke, joint degeneration, cancer, depression: These words are true whether you're thin or fat, but the odds of not hearing those words are much better if you are thinner.

The choice is yours, I feel your pain, I had the bypass and gained all but 40 pounds back, just had the lap band at 270 pounds, however when o was going through the approval process, I realized that band or no band that this body of MINE is MY RESPONSIBILITY! From March 3 til my final appt. With my surgeon I demanded from myself to start eating healthy, and to SAVE MY OWN LIFE! I am happy to report that I went from 291 to 271 in less than 2 months and this was prior to my pre op diet for the lap band. I stopped fast food, eating out, and did 5 servings of fruit and 4 veggies a day, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU MUST GO BACK TO THE BASICS, LEAN Protein FIRST! From my experience Me and my first surgery failed each other, you have to take responsibility for why you are where you are! If we that have gained weight back be honest our habits drastically changed from when we first lost the weight! Change your habits, if your band is now positioned correctly, go get your fills and save your life! I wish you luck, YOU CAN DO IT!

This is my biggest fear. I have tried very hard to change my lifestyle permanently. I indulge once in a while, but I know that I could easily slip back into bad habits. I eat nothing without knowing exactly how many calories are in it, to a point of obsession. Granted there are times I eat a high calorie item anyway but I just don't and can't let it be part of my everyday life.

I know you are having complications with the band, are you eating the right foods? Get back to the basics. Follow the rules, chew chew chew, eat slow, and small bites. I haven't been stuck in many months!

I wish you luck! YOu can do it!

If you are serious about getting back on track, this is a great way to do it. It's called the Five Day Pouch Test, and it is a good way start over from the beginning:

http://5daypouchtest.com/plan/theplan.html

You said you had an adjustment but didn't lose weight. Did you also change your eating habits? Do you monitor your calorie intake? The thing is, your band could be the perfect restriction and in the perfect place, but if you're still eating unhealthy food you're not going to loose weight. In the end, it's you that has to make the changes and do the work. The band is just a tool.

Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
