Pneumonia-7 Days Post Op

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery 5/24, and the breathing was unbearable I guess from the gas. Finally on Tuesday I went to the ER because it was very painful to take deep breaths. They admitted me. They were concerned I had a clot in my lungs or pneumonia. To say the very least, this has been a horrifying experience! They released me last nite from hospital with indications that I may have pneumonia. I am on my way to my primary care dr so he can take care of me from here. He is the only one I trust at this point. I WAS SELF PAY SO I HAD MY SURGERY IN A SURGERY CENTER NOT THE HOSPITAL. I BEGGED THEM NOT TO LET ME LEAVE BECAUSE I WAS HAVING PROBLEMS BREATHING ON THE DAY OF SURGERY, THEY STILL PUSHED ME OUT THE DOOR AT 5 PM. I HIGHLY SUGGEST IF YOU FEEL THIS WAY AFTER SURGERY, IF YOU FEEL THAT YOU SHOULD NOT GO HOME YET, DO NOT GO HOME. PLEASE GET ADMITTED SO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SUFFER THIS LONG BEFORE GETTING HELP. Of course pain from gas is normal, but if you feel that it may be a little more than expected, please make sure the dr's and nurses hear you loud and clear that you want help.

I do not post this to scare anyone, only so that nobody has to go through what I have been through this week. I hope the rest of my journey is a positive one from this day forward!

I am suffering the same as you!! I also ended up in the ER!! I had my surgery on 5/25/12 I called my doctor because I was having trouble breathing he scolded me about not using the spirometer that I was suppose to have received the day of my surgery but they forgot to give me!! Thanks to that I was in the hospital 2 days having breathing treatments every 2-4 hours!! I have to admit that my doctor has been great he has been calling me on a daily basis and asking if he can do anything to help! I hope you get better soon!! Im still working on the breathing the pain is awful!

Sounds like you both have had a rough start! I hope you get to feeling better. You can put this behind you and be on your way to a healthier lifestyle.

Ps. If your doctor isn't taking good care of you, get a second opinion!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
