So I have finally been scheduled for all my pre op appts... Yay!!!! :) I will be done at the end of June and Hopefully banded in mid July... Thankfully with my insurance I dont have to wait 6 months.... I just need to complete a psych eval, a nutrition class & consult, an upper GI, and then my surgeon wants to do a weight check... ( she told me at my consult that I need to lose 10-15lbs before surgery). I have several containers of GNC Lean shakes that I plan on using to replace meals.. I meet with my Surgeon on June 26 so I am hoping to be down at least 10lbs... So at that visit I can set a tentative surgery date upon insurance approval....

Does anyone know if these (GNC lean shakes) good for Protein supplements... I am wondering if I could also use them when I am asked to do my liquid diet & also after I have hopefully been banded is this a good shake to use for protein basically? Any feedback is good feedback.. B)

My surgeon put me on the bariatrix shakes you can find them on Amazon and with shipping it is about $32 I love the vanilla kind each scoop has 10g of Protein and each shake consists of 3 scoops so that is 30g of protein every shake I think that is a good amount......anyway that is the brand I have been advised to use for my 2 week pre surgery liquid diet (one week down surgery set for June 6th)

Not sure what the nutritional values are of the lean shakes, but here are the guidelines that my dietitian set out for me (and my husband) post op. (pre-op we were just told to lose as much weight as possible, so we did the Atkins diet the week before, and then Clear liquids the day before)

Post op we were told to drink 50-80 grams of Protein per day (at least 50 for me and at least 70 for him) Any shakes we drank had to have less than 10 grams of sugar per 8 oz.

In order to get that amount of Protein post op we added Protein powder to pre-mixed Protein Shakes. We were told to only drink 2oz of protein every 15 mins, so we made 1 shake in the morning that was pumped with protein and then sipped on that all day long.

That being said.... sorry for the long answer. If you like those shakes and they are high protein low sugar, you should be able to drink them throughout all of the stages. But of course always check with your doc!

I just looked up GNC Lean and it does not seem like a good choice for Lap Band patients. It has 180 cals for only 9 g of Protein and lists "milk Protein concentrate". My doctor says to use whey Isolate Protein Powder. Check the label as not all whey protein is Isolate (a better type or protein that your body can digest easier). I use Gold Standard 100% Whey (double chocolate) and Dymatize Nutrition Elite (gourmet vanilla): they are around 114 cals for 24 g of protein. The higher the protein level the longer you will feel full as it takes a while for the body to digest protein (longer than carbs).

I go to Vitamin Shoppe they have stores and online.

Ready to Drink I buy Premier Brand (160 cals for 30 g of protein).

Premier Protein shakes are great, I have only had the chocolate and they taste like chocolate milk.

You will see them advertised on this site and as far as I know they only sell them at Cosco or Sams.

My doctor sells powder to make shakes in her office so I have never had to look for good powder.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
