Doctor Forgot To Give Me The Spirometer After Surgery!!

Recommended Posts

I had Lapband surgery on Friday and my doctor forgot to give me the spirometer!! I was all drugged up so I didn't even think about it, I was perfectly fine until last night I started coughing and whezzing!! This morning I walked my son to school and almost passed out because I was not breathing correctly! I called the doctor and he told me that's why I gave you the spirometer to avoid breathing issues!! I said I'm sorry but I think you forgot to give it to me!! Long story short, now I'm sitting in a hospital bed getting breathing treatments every 2-4 hours!! So please avoid this if you are having surgery don't forget the spirometer!! :-/

I didn't have one either....was told to cough every hour to help keep the lungs clear. Not sure I did that either!

I was given one at pre op and was told to bring to the hospital when I arrived for surgery, however I was released on the same day and no one ever mentioned it and I forgot to mention it. I used it on my own a couple of times when I came home. I really didn't know what to do with it, how to use it or how often. I didn't have any problems either.

I stayed over night for my surgery so I was using it even before I even got discharged...It just made its way to the trash a week or so ago.

Never had one for my band.

I had one over 20 years ago when I my gall bladder removed with a full open procedure. I needed it then but not for the band.

I've never had any breathing issues and I was given one. I did use it as instructed. I didn't want to take a chance getting pneumonia.

Thats is the way it was for me as well. Why take a chance?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
