Drinking And Standing

Recommended Posts

How long should you wait before drinking after eating???

And has anyone had the problem of having to stand and eat to make food go down better??

My surgeon says not to drink 5 minutes before meals and not til 30 minutes after. I would specifically ask your surgeon, as they vary so much. If you are having to stand to get food down, you should evaluate what your eating (texture) and how well you are chewing.

I agree with NWgirl - ask your surgeon or dietician. My team strongly suggested 20 minutes before meals and 30 after, to ensure the food gets to digest and not just washed down leaving you more hungry.

Read Helen Bauzon's magazine article just to the right of this post. Also read the comments as some people are skeptical?

I was told 30 minutes after.

No, on the standing thing.

When I would get stuck I would stand and walk around, jump up and down (lol) that didn't work either!

I can drink anytime before meals. My doctor has always said to wait 20 minutes after i am done with my meal. Take my advise and wait the 20 minutes. I have drank to soon after eating and it causes me to erupt. :o

I try to wait 30-45 minutes. Many people here seem to way 30 as well. As for standing, sometimes yes I get up and walk around but it's usually because something is stuck. Moving around helps it go down sometimes.

My surgeon makes us wait 30 minutes before and 1 hour after. They had us train pre op for this change and so far so good. I will say that with fish and veggies you will remain full if you follow the rules.

My surgeon wants us to wait 2 hours after a meal! I find it impossible to wait that long! I am always thirsty! I feel better now that I have read you others wait just 30 min. I can do that! I just am used to always having a liquid near me. I do still feel full if I drink afterwards & not hungry at all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
