Drinking Soda's??

Recommended Posts

Some of my friends who have had the surgery still drink diet cokes, carbonated drinks - I personally haven't since my surgery in December - I was told not to drink anything carbonated - does anyone know the reason why we shouldn't drink carbonation ?

It's because as the bubbles pop in your stomach it can cause your band to slip.

It could make you vomit, with all the gas. Repeated vomiting can lead to a slip.

The "gas" caused by the carbonation causes me to feel really full--almost bloated. I have tried soda on several occassions and it just doesn't taste good. Guess I'm finished with it now...which I know is best.

The above posters are correct, it's because carbonation can lead to slips.

My roommate when I had my band surgery was in for a band replacement. She had been regularly drinking soda, and it caused her band not only to slip but her stomach to prolapse through her band. She also gained 40 pounds during that time as well.

Carbonation just isn't worth the risk in my opinion.

Last diet coke, the night before surgery...really wish I would have made it a beer...had to give up that too.

Carbonation and the bands are not friends....surgeon said no fizzy....so no fizzy.

Wow I never knew it caused slips. I had diet Sprite yesterday at a cookout. I filled up a cup with ice and I poured the soda, I let it sit for about 10 mins then I stirred it until the bubbles stopped coming up. I read this trick somewhere on the forum. But Ive only had soda twice since surgery

Question, I my doctor said it was ok for me to have the crystal light drinks, but does anyone know if that goes for the other single serve packet drinks like kool-aid, or other generic drinks?

I was told to avoid artificially sweetened beverages and drinks with Caffine. They said it wasn't to do too much with the band but more with them not being 'good' for you.

As for the carbonation I was told it should be avoided. The odd one is okay and someone else said, it's okay if you stir out most of the bubbles. I was told that too much carbonation, over time, can cause your upper pouch to expand which will make the band ineffective. I don't think I can say I'm never having pop again but I do plan on making sur most of the carbonation is gone before I drink it.

I think i'll keep it limited like i have been doing now ... I dont really miss the soda. It's just a nice alternative from Water, but I like tea and juice too.

diet soda is full of chemicals too and can in some instances raise your blood sugars.. some people can tolerate carbonated drinks post banding personally i cant but a good alternative would be carbonated spring Water and just let it stand for a while to let a lot of the gas go before u drink it :)

I don't drink pop/soda. I just want to add some flavor to my Water by using the kool-aid single serve drink packets. By the way I am doing the pre-op Atkins diet. Surgery date is June 5th

I had one sip of something lightly carbonated before realizing what I had done. SO PAINFUL!!! I had that Oh S**T moment as I was swallowing and then was in huge pain for the rest of the night... I won't be trying that again any time soon...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
