Dr Said Nothing And Not Requiring Multi-Vitamin

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, first off let me say that I may not be able respond, somethin is up when I hit repond on my compuper, hm?? Anyway, my surgery is June 20th and I called and talked to the nurse today and asked about Vitamins and she said "oh its not like gastric bypass, you should get all the nutrients you need". From what I've been reading on here everyone is on a Multi-Vitamin and my DR doesn't require it. Just concerned here. thx

Even without wls I think it is a good idea to take a Multivitamin. I have taken them over 30 years so far.

I took Multivitamins for the first couple of months after surgery but haven't done since. I eat a varied diet and do not think I have any nutritional deficiencies. My hair hasn't fallen out, I am not exceptionally tired, I don't creak any more than your average 49year old etc.

If I was on a low carb regime then I might take a supplement but I think my diet is varied enough not to need one.

thanks everyone for your input. I was concerned mostly because prior to surgery I will be doing Protein Drinks for 2 weeks and that's it and of course following surgery the required diet plan. Question - everyone on here raves about "liquid vitamins", once I'm banded I will not get my first fill for a month will I be able to swallow a Vitamin pill or do you suggest liquid vitamins?

I take the gummy vitamins - easier to swallow than a pill and better tasting than the liquid. :)

When I was in the hospital, they gave me a Multi-Vitamin and before I saw it I asked if it was chewable. The nurse looked at me like I was crazy. It was the swallow kind and I had always read you shouldn't/couldn't take whole pills, etc.. It went down fine. However, at home I have chewable Centrum, chewable Calcium and liquid B complex.

He probably said that because if you do not become Vitamin deficient you dont need Vitamins. Your body wont use it and you will only pee it out. I get my vitamin levels checked twice a year and the only one I have ever been deficient in is B 12 because I dont eat meat. Other than that I get a shot every other week and do not take any other supplements.< /p>

We were told to start daily Vitamins during our pre-op and should continue from there on.

So many chewables.....any type of deficiency will affect you in some way... LOTS of Protein and a daily. Have not lost any hair.< /p>

When I go the the surgeon's office I see SO MANY ladies with no hair... or big bald and thining spots; he does the bypass as well so maybe they had that.

I take a liquid/gel multi Vitamin and Calcium +d everyday. And when I go to my follow UPS my doctor does make sure I'm still taking them. I agree with the earlier post, even without wls we should be taking daily Vitamins.< /p>

when visiting my nutritionist and the surgeon, they stressed the importance of Vitamins to me. so i have been taking them (multi is chewable) the iron/b12 are tiny but after surgery, hub or me will either smash them or cut into tiny tiny pieces. just do what your doctor say to do is all i can offer.

I take a chewable multivitamin and calcium chews daily. While the Lap Band doesn't hinder nutrient absorption, it couldn't hurt to give your body a little Vitamin boost!

My surgeon stressed the importance of taking both a multi Vitamin and Calcium supplement. This is not because the food choices are questionable in quality, but that we limit the quantity of food, and the ability of the body to absorb all of the nutrients it needs is then also limited.

The supplements I use are both chewable. I purchase the Vitamins at his practice because they are less expensive there, and the calcium from CVS.

Thanks everyone, I've opted to take a Multi-Vitamin as many of you have done or are doing, after all I should be on one anyway, I know, Iknow. Thanks again. You guys are great!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
