I am a newly banded and have been reading the posts which are quite interesting and helpful.

My question is some people talk about the “Stuck Incidents” what are they?

How do I avoid it?

What do you do when this happens?

It sounds terrifying

Stuck incidents are user error either caused by eating too large of bites, not chewing well enough, or by eating a food that will have a hard time passing through (such as dry meats- think chicken).

They can be painful, but they usually pass fairly quickly. I think everyone probably experiences a couple before they figure out how to properly consume a meal.

If you get REALLY stuck, you will probably PB (productive burp), which is where the body starts creating excess saliva to try and push the blockage through the band. Sometimes it will go through, other times you will cough up whatever was stuck. PB's are not vomitting, as they do not come from below the stomach.

Stress is another cause for food getting stuck...just found this out & it's been my cause. If u have been blocked for over 20min then stay on liquids for 24hrs to let your tummy relax & calm down. Yes it hurts like hell, & yep probably need a holiday too ???„

chicken is NOT evil ......the way you cook it may be. I ALWAYS dip it into some kind of sauce or some kind of salad dressing. Also if you marinate it for at least 20 min. then cook it in a foil pouch, I find that the chicken is moist! And we all know that MOIST is a chickens best friend.

I'm just saying..................

I had a 1/2 Cesar chicken salad from Wendy's for dinner last night. I had no problem with the chicken in it. You really have to have something to dip chicken breast into. But, I tend to eat the "dark"meat of chicken, such as thighs. they are moist and don't really need anything to dip into. By the way, even 1/2 salad was too much for me, last night. I ate some of the greens and all the chicken breast. My best friend, however, is tilapia fish. Yumm, yumm!!

I am at restriction and have chicken twice a day!! White meat at that. Some people also keep their bands WAY TO TIGHT which causes more stuck episodes.

I want to clarify just a bit about stuck incidents being "user error". While they can be user error, there are other contributing factors; stress, seasonal allergies, time of the month and being too tight all can cause food that is otherwise tolerated to get stuck.

I'm eating chicken right now (banded 1/26/12), mixed with Bush's seasoned black Beans. I eat it for lunch a LOT! I was just stuck on dry chicken last week, also had my first stuck episode on a deviled egg! I can't do dry chicken, and I found out I need to actually CHEW my food, LOL. Also to take smaller bites.

when things get stuck do you drink Water to flush it down. is it hard to breathe when this happens. I am so afraid of gagging. I am probably worrying about stuff to much.

Hi! I find if I "clog" it is generally from some sort of potato......which, of course, I love.....can't eat many French fries or hash browns anymore! Also, if I get "stuck" I CANNOT drink anything, even Water, it just comes right back out..........I have to relax, quit eating, and just wait. I have learned the "signal" for when I am about to "clog"....I start to feel like my food is piled up a bit in my chest and is a bit uncomfortable, that's when I know that if I put in anything it will just come right back up. Took me a long time to figure out that certain feeling. I find that this happens to me more frequently when I eat my first solid meal of the day - takes awhile for the stomach to "wake up" I guess!! I have had some bad times with this little problem and it has been a bit embarrassing, too. AND it can be VERY painful - for me it hurts in my chest and I tend to feel like everything is sitting right at my throat. Sometimes ya just need to get to a bathroom and let it come out........really feels a lot better!! Kinda get used to it.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
