Teresa555 7 Posted May 27, 2012 Hi I am new to this forum and to this journey! I go in on the 12th for my first consultation. My insurance does cover this so that helps! My question is, how long does this process take before you actually have the surgery and what should I expect??? Any advice or answers will help and are welcomed!! Thanks in advance!! gottobeme 81 Posted May 27, 2012 My advice is to not worry how long the process takes. I know it is easier said then done. It is different for everyone. Just go with it and make the most of your journey!
cmk99 39 Posted May 27, 2012 I too am just getting started, I had my consultation 5/16. At my appointment I met with everyone involved in the process so the apt was about 3 hrs but I'd rather have one long visit then 6 short ones! I have been looking for a time line also but after reading tons of different post it seems like no two people are the same!
gottobeme 81 Posted May 27, 2012 My guess would be on average 6-8 months. Self pay seem to get through much faster some in a month. Some insurances will require a doctor visit per month for 6 months, miss just one month and it starts all over! I have heard of others that require 3 months. Teresa555 7 Posted May 28, 2012 Well when I called my insurance before I made my consultation they told me my insurance covers bariatrics I just have to have a BMI of 40(which mine is higher;() or 35 with comorbids which I have high blood pressure and sleep apnea. They said I am just responsible for my deductible and co ins until I meet my out of pocket and then it's covered at a 100%!! I guess I'm also wondering what kind of test the dr has you do before surgery?
DeAna N 229 Posted May 28, 2012 I just started but so far I'm scheduled for the nutritionist, psych exam and the scope of my esophagus. Not sure if I have anything else

I guess I'm also wondering what kind of test the dr has you do before surgery? as far as tests go, my doctor has you get pre-op bloodwork, give a stool sample to test for h.pylori, and then a " behavior assessment" ( psych eval). If you see any specialists (cardiologist, etc.) he wants you to get a clearance letter saying you're safe for surgery.
Teresa555 7 Posted May 28, 2012 I just had yearly blood work 5months ago I wonder if that will be ok and I actually got tested for h-pylori too at that time because of a stomached pain I was having but it came back negative! So I guess that leaves the psych eval :/ and whatever else! Seems like a long process but I know it will be worth it I have a husband and 3 small children who need a mom around and one that can be active again!! tomato pie 15 Posted May 28, 2012 I know what you mean about your children having an active mom, I often feel like I am just sitting on the sidelines of life watching everyone else get to play the game. I have a 2 year old son and I feel guilty that I can't run around with him as much as my husband can But not for long! I am determined to change and be successful with the lapband when I get it good luck to you, I really mean that.
