Getting Stuck

Recommended Posts

Had my band nearly 6 months ago and still get stuck after every "first bite". Once it goes down ( which usually requires me going to the bathroom and throwing up) then I can continue my meal. Thus happens to me on a daily basis. The vomitting happens maybe 3-4 times a week. By vomitting I mean that i just let out that one piece that won't go down and then i'm fine. I'm worried about slippage. Anyone living the same thing?

I also get that "first bite syndrome"... Feels like the food is about to get stuck, but if I stop, tale a few deep breaths and wait a minute it passes no problem and I could continue eating. I have only had 2 fills (5CC total).

Try having a warm drink before you eat. Don't let yourself get so hungry that you don't eat that first bite slowly enough. Pay extra attention to how you eat it and then wait a couple of minutes before the next bite. Hopefully some of this might help.

I've been experiencing FBS more often lately. Each time it's because I let myself get too hungry and therefore ate too fast. It always resolves itself after a few minutes, but it's no fun!

Ok you all are making me nervous. Lol Are you serious? First Bite Syndrome? So, I'll get stuck or have an episode at every 1st bite?

I dont really experience pain, it just feels like "hard" swallowing... Lol sounds weird but that's what I call it. It just feels like I feel it all the way down, until it settles then I'm ok.

not necessarily... sometimes it can happen but mostly you should be o.k. just follow the rules about the size of the bite.. or in your case, the size of the spoon... how long you chew for (even with mushies, and i know its hard lol.) ... waiting for about 20 seconds for the eosophagus to push the food down, and then another bite. Dont worry about it. If you stress out you arent going to make it easie r for yourself. you will do fine, believe me. just make sure that your food is without lumps .

I don't get first bite syndrome...but if I have waited too long to eat, I find that my first few bites and chews are usually too big and too fast. That can be uncomfortable so I have learned to slow down and not allow myself to get that hungry.

im much the same. its the initial hunger that causes eating problems.

I agree. The only two times I've gotten stuck have been eating too fast because I was too hungry.

I am the exact same way. I didn't know there was a name for it. Does this happen even when you may need a fill?? I don't feel full when I eat. Should I schedule a fill if I don't feel full?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
