Has anyone been required to drink a shake brand sold by their doctor? Mine does, but it tastes absolutely awful and gives me terrible lower abdominal issues. What brand do you use?

I am very leery of doctors that sell products that you "must" use. My doctor had things available at his office, but also gave me a hand-out of things I could get from the grocery store that would be fine to use. So far the best shake I've had that was on my doctor's list is the SlimFast High Protein/Low Carb vanilla shake.

I use whey Protein from Walmart, as long as it has enough protein, low carb, low sugar my dr dont care. But he does sell a brand at the office but its expensive and not gonna pay all that money it might be nasty. To me this brand is tolerable.

I also got the whey shakes from Walmart. My doc gave me samples in a gift bag at the seminar of several Protein drinks and they were all nasty (including the ones he sells). I would be leery also if my doc required me to use only his.

Good luck!

My doctor recommends whey isolate Protein powder. I would get the nutritional info from you doctor's brand bring it to Vitamin Shoppe/GNC and ask for a brand that has similar numbers. In general try to stay below 120 cals for about 24 g of Protein and less than 4 g of carbs or fat.

For ready to drink shakes I like Premier Brand available at costco or Sams.

Slimfast has high carbs and not enough protein (even the high protein version).

I started with a doctor who "demanded" that I buy ONLY Bariatric Advantage products . . . had other issues and switched to a different doctor for my lap band surgery. Their office was very flexible about Protein products as long as they were NOT high in carbs.

My doctor prefers a certain brand, that is nasty! So I went to GNC and got a different one with similar protien calorie carb and sugars. What he doesn't know won't hurt him

Very good input. Thanks everyone. I will give a few of those a try.

Soccer, Bariatric Advantage is the product my doctor is pushing. I wonder if the kick back he's getting is good, or if he really believes it's the best? He gave me a free sample. Yuck, but it fits the limitations HONK was mentioning above.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
