What Am I Doing Wrong? Please Help!

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 3/20/12. I receievd my first fill 4 weeks post op and had no problems or restriction. Four weeks later, eight weeks after surgery I receieved my second fill, this was last Friday. I was able to drink Water in the office and continue to do fine with liquids. However, I have had to vomit everyday, at least once a day since Friday. All episodes are during meals, usually after 5-6 bites. I thought I was eating too fast the first few days so I have slowed down considerably, chewing 30 times per bite. I start to feel this pressure, then hear the gurgleing and then them pain. Please help I can't live like this. Breakfast bars, Protein Shakes are fine. But anything else........ Thanks!

Go get an unfill. Overfilled bands cause all sorts of problems including slips, erosion, and permanent damage. It's not worth it.

I agree, you cannot live like that and need a minor unfill. I know you are probably afraid of setting yourself back but it is very dangerous to be too full.

I have a similar problem but there are some foods that don't cause that feeling(fish, and dark chicken). After 3-5 bites and lots of chewing, my pouch is full, I can't eat anymore and sometimes I slime. It's mostly very uncomfortable and not real painful. I can't talk to anyone till the food moves through the band. And, sometimes I can go back to eating and eat a cup or more. Odd?

I agree with the others. Have them take out .25 or .5 ccs. I'm thinking of doing the same.

Ok, thanks. It just crazy that I only had 2cc at my first fill and then 1 at my second fill. Totally surprised that I would be this restricted with only 3cc's but what do I know.

Also be aware that as you continue to lose weight, you may need more fills as the fatty pad around your stomach disappears and the band gets loser. I am sure your surgeon will be less aggressive with your fills from now on.

Please get some taken out...I did get through this feeling with Protein Shakes and Soup but my surgeon was not pleased that I did not contact him...certainly not a way to live.

My doctor said " no matter what u read online vomiting is not normal ! If u do vomit get to my office immediately !" I have not had that problem but glad for the warning.vomiting can mess up the band.See ur Doctor immediately.

I suggest drinking a hot liquid like a tea or having some hot consommé prior to your meal. You might be experiencing swelling from after the fill, and this "opens up" your esophagus to help you eat. It could be that you need that prior to eating. The person above who said that they have 5-6 bites, slime, then can eat a cup or more might need to "open" te esophagus prior to eating.

I got 3.5cc's at my first fill and was in so much pain I was crying... Went back a few hours later and got 1cc removed, feel MUCH better...

Everyone's body is different, and it's not just the amount of liquid in the band, but also how thick your stomach is in there too... Some people don't get a full for a year!

You just could be one of the people who need .5 cc or less per fill. I hope you find some relief. Stick to liquids for a day or two, and as mentioned warm liquids help "prime" the band a bit (just relax it).

I can only get .5cc for a fill. Twice they put 1cc in and I couldn't eat anything.

3cc may not sound like a lot to most people, but due to the position of the band and size of your stomach, 3cc may be a ton for you. I actually had a TON of restrictions at only 3cc, too. In fact, I even had some restriction when my band was still empty.

I had a .5cc fill on Monday and spent the better part of the week really uncomfortable and unable to eat much of anything. I was taking small bites, chewing thoroughly, and pausing between bites. But, I still found myself sliming and even PB'd once. Today, I had this light bulb moment... "what if the bites aren't small enough?" So, I tried a bite about the size of my fingernail. It went in without a problem. I continued to eat a Lean Cuisine with the tiny bites, chewing well, and pausing between bites and was able to have a nice lunch without a single problem.

It took me all week to figure it out, but when I did I was so happy. Perhaps you might want to try even smaller bites? I figure it's at least worth a try. If that still doesn't work, I agree with the others, you probably need a slight unfill.

Mis73 - I was told bites of Protein should be the size of a pencil eraser (or fingernail!)!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
