Post Surgery: Do You Have Problems With Carb Addiction ?

Recommended Posts

well, today I've eaten yogurt, a banana, a kiwifruit, crackers with cheese and a sweet biccie or two because they were on the table in the staff room (and teachers never pass up free food!!). So on the whole I eat carbs!

Sounds like there is not alot of stress related to taking in less carbs post surgery.

P.S. Can anybody confirm this ?

If someone is used to eating crap they shouldn't and expects to suddenly be "cured" of that because of surgery, then, yeah, they might find themselves stressed out due to unrealistic expectations.

My doc doesn't restrict carbs after surgery, but when your stomach becomes significantly smaller and getting the Protein you need becomes paramount, you will have to choose between living a more healthy life or continuing to eat the junk that got us here in the first place.

I'm not cutting all carbs out, I'm basically "practicing" cutting out the foods that cannot take precedence in my diet post-op (foods that never should have from the beginning).

I'm a week in after surgery. I've had only liquids for a week. Before the surgery I was two days just on liquids. Those two days before were hard for me. After the surgery however I was not hungry for anything, up until the 2nd day after the band surgery. Yes... missing food will be there I'm finding out. I was told to fill up on Protein with a Protein Drink. It has helped.

you should be on liquids the first 24 hr after a fill due to swelling.

Here are a couple of websites that explain how in some cases caffeine is associated with ulcers. I am sure it is just in extreme cases but if you already experience reflux or IBS ( like I do), it might be best to stay away from it.

Thanks for the forward. Will check it out. In terms of caffeine, I've been drinking a pot of coffee a day for almost 20 years. I know its not good (so don't stone me for this) but never had any experience in terms of reflux or anything like that.

Now that I'm married....my wife makes me coffee everyday that is not as strong and notice I drink alot less coffee now. Anyway, I'll check those links out.

Success to you !

Unfortunately the "mushy phase" is usually carbs. I went through carb withdrawal pee opt then had to have some soft foods like cream of wheat and pudding and some mashed potatoes and now I feel like I need to try again bc I am starving and craving. Haven't had a fill yet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
