Wish I Had Waited For Plication

Recommended Posts

When I looked into Lap Band, the Dr I was using said he did not recomend it because it was so new. Looking on here I see how happy people are. I wish I had waited two months. I think I could have found another Dr who would have done it. I am upset with myself for rushing into the band!!

I am in Dallas.

My doctor does lap-band with plication and he offered me that option. I opted for the band only. That is the ONLY regret I have had about WLS!

What is plication???

Plication is when they fold the stomach and stitch it up in addition to the band. It acts as a sleeve with no cutting. Kind of an upgraded lapband. I am opting for the plication with the band but get nervous about doing it because it is still so new.

Interesting that you asked. When I went to the seminar it was considered free at the time because insurance does not have a billable code for it yet. Still no billable code but they are charging for it. I asked my surgery coordinator and they said they don't have the numbers just yet since I was going through insurance. While in the waiting room I overheard someone that was self-pay asking about it and she said roughly 3000 more. i will update you when I get the true numbers.

Haha no kidding! I think they are capitalizing on it since so many are wanting plication.

My doctor offered it at no additional charge because he is part of a research group studying the long-term effects of plication with the band. I declined it but it was nice that it was offered at no additional charge.

I guess in another few years there will be something newer and more up to date. I was self pay so the band was not cheap. My insurance will not pay for ANY weight loss surgery. I would have gotten it if it were included. But any new surgery of any type of Weight Loss is too much$$$$.

Going through some more What Ifs!!!!!!

There will always be something better and more shiny than you have. Don't get caught up on the idea and just be grateful you atleast got the band.

Eek! I hope I don't screwed with a big extra cost. I know my doctor has already done 50 plications so I wonder if he already has enough for a study. I still plan to pay for it, because for me it is worth it. I'm afraid I will fail the band and the plication gives me the extra comfort.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
