Does Sugar Free Cause Diarrhea

Recommended Posts

on my liquid diet' date=' they say all sugar fee pop iscles, Jello and cystal liight, does this gives you the runs?[/quote']

I think your lack of Fiber is more a cause of loose stool than fake sweeteners. Also lower quality Protein gives me more issues than whey isolate.

Large amounts of sugar free substitutes can give some people diarrhea. Everyone's GI tract reacts differently to sugar free.

Doesn't necessarily need to be "large amounts"....My friend had stopped smoking and took to chewing sugar free gum. She kept insisting that her body must be going through withdraws because she stays in the bathroom all the time. Finally she mentioned that she had been chewing on sf gum (3 pieces a day) after meals (because thats when she would smoke)....I went and bought her regular gum and told her to see if it made a difference...it stop instantly. She thought I was a genius...I told her I was-haha

Some people just seem to be very sensitive to it....It doesn't bother me at all

I have a hard time with sugar free. I had to switch to a stevia sweetned shake for the pre-op because I couldn't leave the bathroom.

I've used Splenda and sugar free for quite awhile and do not experience any if those side effects. xylitol can do that to me though. Everyone has a different reaction to these things. Is stevia and Splenda the same?

Stevia is a plant extract, while splenda is modified sugar.

A lot of sugar substitutes carry a warning that excessive consumption can cause issues. I remember going to movies years ago and buying a cup of sugar free candies to eat during the movie, this was prior to them carrying warnings, a couple of hours later I got the worst cramps and runs ever.As a result I am now ultra careful about how much of these type of products I consume.

I actually wrote to the manufacturer to complain about the lack of warning.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
