Question About Quantity Of Liquids..

Recommended Posts

I am 5 days post op. Still on a liquid diet. Here is a typical day: 1/2 coffee mug of Tomato Soup for Breakfast, 1/2 coffee mug of Protein Shake for lunch, and 1/2 coffee mug of Protein shake for dinner. Does this sound right? I don't think I am getting 500 calories a day. I am starving to death, too. But I am really not for sure how much liquid I can drink/sip at one time. i don't want that pouch to get stretched out or the band to move.

How much should I really be drinking on this liquid diet? And how slowly do you sip it? Meaning is it like the eating where you wait a minute between bites? I am really confused and do not see my doctor for a few weeks. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks, Misti

I had 3 Protein Shakes a day that I think were at least 16 ounces. If I remember correctly I was told to have 64 ounces liquid a day. I was also eating sugar free jellos and sugar free popsicles. The shakes prob took me 45 minutes to drink.

Try getting a spoon, and eating the Soup like that, to keep the 'sips' small.

I was told that I should have some form of liquis sitting beside me from the time I wake until the time I do to bed. Sip,sip, sip. Now as for what was "sitting' beside me. After 72 hours, I was expected to start with the high Protein liquids. I did the Unjury chicken broth and the New Whey protein because they are of Water consistency and where much easier to get down than the thick protein powders. I found sipping on the Protein Drinks really helped with the hunger. I slowly added in a little of the thick protein powders as I progressed. If I made the 60 grams of protein in a day, then I would allow my self the sf Jello, and sf popsicles (and anything else that was allowed that I wanted) but I tried real hard to rely on the protein products first.

My surgeon given "goal" was one oz per 15 minutes. You won't stretch your pouch on liquids. It actually takes quite a bit of work to do so. Liquids go right through and provide no resistance within the pouch. You cannot overfill the pouch on liquids, really, they just drain right through.

A dilated pouch happens over a long time of overeating (generally). The upper stomach is a pretty strong muscle. Liquids are not much of a foe to force it open and stretch it out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
