Size Of Bites?

i read a post-op page about vsg and it said they need to take pinky fingernail sized bites. do lapband patients take teensy bites like that as well? if so that's one more thing i'd like to start practicing now.

Maybe not quite that small, but pretty small.

During my pre op class, it was suggested to get a baby spoon to use post op.

During pre-op I was told bite size should be about the size of a dime.

Yes as you go further, it is suggested by my surgeon to take pinky size bites, chew 25-30 times and consistency to go thru a straw wk prevent stuck feelings.

I bought a pack of bay spoons to use the first few months. I've already started with smaller portions and bites, just not pinky sized. Also practice chewing, if you haven't already. That's what I'm having trouble with. Glad I started now!! The automatic-swallow reflex is killer!!!

I'm 5 weeks post op and use baby spoons although not exclusively. It does help to keep the bite sizes down as well as slow down your eating.

Practicing is a good thing, but you really cannot prepare yourself. Once you experience getting stuck a few times you WILL take smaller bites. For me, it depends on the food. I can take bigger bites of softer foods. meats like steak or pork need to be about the size of a pencil eraser.

It starts to come naturally with time.

You are so right... A couple stuck episodes does train your style of eating, size, chewing, and food type.

I love my "hello kitty" toddler fork and spoon. I am not super coordinated but if I really want to slow myself down I use chopsticks when eating things like steak or meats. I once did it with baked Beans. Not recommended lol think I got as far as ten bites each consisting of an individual baked bean lol. meat i will cut up in small bites to start & then It makes me work for each bite. I get tired of trying to master the chopsticks (thanks ADD) and end up savoring each bite. Maybe it helps me more because only about half of my attempts ever make my mouth. I've not yet attempted this in public nor have I started a concealed carry with the toddler ware but it sure has helped me at home.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
