Worried About Slippage Or Band Flip

Recommended Posts

So i knew both of these things were possibilities when i decided to do surgery. The doc as well as tons of info i read about the lap-band make it seem like they dont happen alot nor are they big deals.

However, in the last month or so, nearly everyday when i sign into the forums, I see a new person posting that one or the other has happened...leaving me to believe that both are inevitable.

I really dont want to have to go through another surgery, even if it is something simple.

I have really been wondering about this too. I have my first fill next week and my port area is really sore and kinda lumpy. I am so afraid that the port is turned sideways--maybe it's not...maybe it's just sore because that area is healing...guess I won't find out till I go for my first fill next week.

I have a "lump" under my port incision too, small tho, but two nurse friends have told me its most likely just scar tissue..and im not having any pain at all..so i hope they are right. I havent scheduled first fill yet...nutrtionist and doc both said to wait a week or two and see how im doing, if im still losing steadily, then hold off.

Let's hope that both of us only have scar tissue and won't have to have the crazy thing "fixed". :) Good luck to you.

I can feel my port , it does stick out, and hurts some . It's been like that sense day one. Right under my left Breast by my larges booboo. Some time it feels like it pokes me in the ribs.? But that could be all in my head sense I'm worried and thinking something is wrong. And if and when I do get skinnier isn't it going to stick out even more? As is when looking in Mirrow I can see where it is , is this normal , and should it still be hurting? I was band April 24 , I was 300 lbs and last visit to the doctor on the 11, I was down to 282 lbs. I'm not sue wat I wiegh now, scale are broken.

I can feel my port too., just below my rib. I think the soreness is from the sutures that hold it in place. I'm a month post op and the soreness is getting better. I'm thinking we are just more sensitive to the port being there. I heard it can flip, but if you follow your docs instructions about the first month, like not lifting more than 5 pounds, no bending over, etc., you should be fine. Also, most docs are aware f the flip problem and suture it carefully in place now!

The area around your port will always stick out and be lumpy, unless you have one of the new low profile ports. The more you lose, the more you can feel and see it. I was banded 10/14/10 and mine is still tender and most likely always will be according to my surgeon. If I lean against a counter, or carry a box or laundry basket pressed against it, it hurts.

Same for me. I was banded March of 2011. When I sit on my couch I tend to lean on my right side on the arm of the couch and after a while it gets really sore. It also gets really sore sometimes after a vigorous workout. I have read that when that happens its just because you have tweaked the muscle that the port is stitched to. It goes away, and I have gotten used to it coming and going. I know it is just a normal part of having the band as long as the pain doesn't ever become constant with no sign of letting up I just don't worry about it.

i was told no more than 10 lbs, never said anything about bending, tho for the first two weeks i was careful not to, and now just 3 wks after surgery im back to the trainer...but she has kept the lifting and the core exercises to a minimum.

im aware as well of my port. its right near the waist band of my trousers, but as i lose more weight the soreness is going. I would encourage you to not stress over things that might happen. As long as you do everything you know to do to look after it, there isnt anything else you can do really. There is always a small risk whatever the surgery is, and we know that when we are banded. try and be optimistic about it... after all, the odds are in your favour that you wont have any issues at all. :)

Just remember to follow the rules and you will do fine. You may have various individuals that may not have been educated to know the rules, or possibly slips due to faulty equip, etc. just be informed on how and and what you should eat. Play it safe listen to your body that is the best way you know. Maintain regular appointments, see a nutritionist, excercise, and don't eat cruddy foods:)

It's human nature to worry, your band just gives you 1 extra thing to worry about! The problem with worrying is that it is counterproductive and the stress can make you sick. Any of us could get run over by a bus tomorrow but we don't waste our lives worrying about it. It should be the same with the band. Something may happen but it may not. Worrying won't make any difference. Just follow the rules and live your life without stressing about things that you cannot control.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
