Home From Endoscopy And Sore

Recommended Posts

All in all it wasn't so bad, except that

1) I had to wait 3 hours at the hospital before they took me in and

2) my throat is killing me! I mean very bad pain that isn't gong away or getting any better.

Frozen yogurt is the only thing that helps, and that only temporarily - just seconds before the pain is back.

Oh, and I do have a small hyatal hernia. Will fix when banding

The pain will go away. Not tonight, but probably by morning.

I had mine 4/26. Had to fast. So by the time we left the hospital around 230 - I was starving! And couldn't eat anything b/c it hurt! I had a Moolatte at Dairy Queen. The cold helped but the sugar definitely did not. And about an hour later had some mashed potatoes. I didn't follow the rules b/c I was hungry. I ate again about 5 and had taco bell about 9. Thankfully nothing went wrong and I didn't damage my throat.

So hang in there. Sorry you're hurting so bad. It will feel better =)

Were you awake for the proceedure? I was put in twilight sleep. That's the only way I would allow it. I have an extremely sensitive gag reflex and they would not have gotten the scope down my throat otherwise! I awoke and had NO pain or even discomfort, just very thirsty since I hadn't anyhing to drink for 8 hours. If I need another endo, I won't have to think twice about it - I will request the same doctor.

The dr. should be calling you to check. My throat was a little sore but not bad. The procedure did cause heartburn for me for days.

Thanks for the compassionate words! I am feeling better this morning, though still tender.

Yes, Kat, I was OUT! I remember starting to cry (because I was scared), then the doctor said, "don't worry, I learned it all on youtube," then the next thing you know I was in recovery laughing in my mind about his comment. I'm glad it went that way.

Just wondering, is it normal to be hacking up gunk after the endoscopy?

I had a little mucus the next morning. Just a mid-sized loogie. Nothing I was concerned about.

Glad you're feeling better!

I was super nervous too, TXKMB, and I'd prefer to not do it again. However, it was much smoother than I expected. For me it was just very painful for about 24 hours. The only thing that calmed my throat was ice cream, Popsicles, Succrets, and ice cold Water. I also took Tylenol PM so I could sleep through the pain. By the next evening I was much better. I did hack a lot, and to tell you the truth, over a week later I still seem to have gunk in my throat. Other than that, it was fairly simple. I felt like it was a dress rehearsal for the band surgery, Let us know how it goes. Good luck.

They usially put you out. I have had 2. Just a little sore throat and gassy/bloaty afterwards. The barium swallow is where you drink this stuff (kind of yucky) and then they take an xray. Drink and xray, etc. They track the flow of the drink and look for blockages or whatever they re looking for. Not awful, but not great either.

I think every doctor require different test from what I'm reading. it seems my doctor requires Alot more than some but I think that all pre ops have to have an upper gi & endoscopy

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
