Newbie In North Carolina!

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody! I've been stalking the forums to learn more and more about the lapband surgery and just recently decided to join. I first looked into having this surgery over 5 years ago and it was not covered under the insurance. I now have a different insurance and have been in the process of working toward my surgery for the last 7 months. I really enjoy reading the post and I feel like I learn so much. I have to admit I am a lil' addicted to LBT, lol. I find myself logging on anytime I get a chance. I hope to go through this wonderful journey with everyone and continue after being banded. I received my letter for approval today and I'm so excited for a new start!

Woohoo! You must be so excited right about now. Getting approved is a happy yet slightly scary feeling because now its real. I was banded 6 days ago and am very glad I did it. I'm sure everything will go smoothly for you too.

How is your recovery time? I'm just beginning my journey by researching everything and learning as much as I can. My boyfriend and I have decided to do the surgery at the end of the year because we have a 10 day vacation. Is that enough time to be able to go back to work? We have very physical jobs.

Hey Shelley. Recovery is pretty quick but what exactly do you do for work? After surgery, no strenuous lifting for about a month. They stitch the band to muscles in your abdomen.. It is hard to bend over for a couple weeks. Also your energy may be quite low for a week or two due to the liquid diet. I think 10 days off is plenty of time if your boss lets you take it easy on the physical work, otherwise, a few weeks.

My boyfriend and I work for a Naval shipyard, the 10 is our Christmas break, but after that, legally we have to inform work that we had surgery and we can be put on light duty for a while. (It's a D.O.D. job, so when we have things like this done we have to put it in our medical file) We just aren't planning on telling people, so I was just wondering how long it would take to recover, but your information helps a lot. I'm excited for our seminar on Thursday to get more information. Thank you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
