Fallen Off The Wagon; Unsure Of How To Proceed.

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 12/21/2010. Since that time, I've lost about 30 pounds and I have 7cc in my band.

In all honesty, I was doing well for a while but then began going back to my old eating habits. I am not trying to make excuses but during that time I was sexually assaulted and began to suffer from SEVERE anxiety and depression. I was focused on just surviving on a day-to-day basis. Weight loss wasn't my top priority.

However, I didn't gain any weight despite my eating habits. In fact, I lost a little bit of weight and I have generally held steady since my last fill. I feel some restriction (very little) but I can continue to eat what I want in somewhat smaller portions (but definitely not a 1/2 cup).

I guess what I'm wondering:

1.) Did I stretch out my band/damage my band? I realize only a doctor can diagnose that, but wouldn't I have gained weight if that were the case? Would I feel anything different? What are the symptoms of lap band damage/slippage? Yes, I can eat more, but aside from that, no weight gain or side effects have taken place.

2.) If you fell off the wagon, how did you get back on track? How was it going back to the surgeon?

3.) If someone slips/damages their lap band, what is the treatment? Would I need to get the band removed?

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. I want to get back on track but I'm a bit scared.

First off, my heart breaks for you. I am so sorry, from the bottom of my heart, that you went through such horrible trauma. I pray you're doing better now and have found some peace.

As far as starting over, I know of many who have used the 5 day pouch test to start over. It takes you from liquids, to mushies, to soft, to solids again. Many think it's a good way to jump start losing again and put yourself back in the mindset of being newly banded. Check it out: http://5daypouchtest.com/plan/theplan.html

If you had slipped or damaged your band, chances are good you'd have signs. Be it night cough, vomiting, pain, sliming, etc. If I were in your shoes, I'd make an appointment with your surgeon to have him check it for peace of mind. I'd also request a fill while you're there, too.

You've been through, and survived, so much! You're obviously an incredibly strong woman and a fighter. I have no doubt you'll get back on track with the band and be successful at it, too.

Best wishes to you.

You are a survivor! If you are not having any symptoms then your band is more than likely just fine. I would suggest going back to your surgeon as soon as possible and let her/him know what you have been through - it will all be confidential and will give them the information they need to support you appropriately. I am sure they will be most encouraging of your commitment to get back on the bandwagon and should be able to provide you with strategies and support for success.

Best wishes

I have been through what u have. With time you'll start to feel better. It will never go away just get easier to deal with. As for the band start over. Just as u just had your surgery. I was banded in 07 I lost 130lbs than got pregnant and gained back 100lbs. I was depressed and devistated. I ate how much and what I wanted. I had a prolapse and had it fixed. I started over and today at the docs I was down to 161 lbs. I started at 310. Good luck you also can do it!!!!

Thanks to everyone for your encouragement and support! It is so inspiring to hear of the success you've all experienced. :)

I will definitely give my surgeon a call and make an appointment. I was just afraid he'd judge me and think to himself "Why did we perform this surgery on you if you can't stick with the program?!". I know many people fall off the bandwagon at some point during their journey but it's incredibly difficult to pick back up and start over again.

And again, Many thanks for the support and guidance!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
