Can't Eat Anything But Still Not Losing?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am scheduled for my appt with my surgeon on Thursday. I am very excited to say the least. I do have a question for all the veterans however.

Quite often I read on here that people cannot eat anything. They either vomit or avoid food altogether. Often these same people report not being able to lose weight or even gain weight?

I know if you eat too little your metabolism slows down, but at some point you would lose weight?

I am just concerned. I already have a bit of a sensitive stomach. One of my concerns is that this might aggravate that. I don't want to do all that suffering and then not be able to lose!

And I understand the slider food part. But can you really eat a full days worth of calories with slider foods? I "think" I would get sick of them after a while.

Thanks,

Laura

I think we all have different definitions of "slider foods"? For me, Soups, ice cream, booze, hamburger helper, tuna helper, creamy Soups, noodles with alfredo sauce, chips, Cookies, cakes, pies washed down with milk? So, yes you can really get your fill of calories with slider foods.

As far as your other question: If you eat too little and take in too few calories(800?), you risk getting sick and other complications. It's not worth it. Your body will react so much healthier if you can keep the calories in in the 1200-1600 range. Of course, exercise plays a large key here.

People who cannot eat anything may have a mechanical problem. A small unfill can remedy many of these problems, or a complete unfill. There are so many other issues that can come up(i.e. gerd) there's not enough time there to go over them all.

As with any forum, people who have a problem will come here to vent or seek advise. They are a small minority compared to the thousands who have had surgery and remain on the sideline and never visit sites like this.

I highly recommend you order Jean McMillan's book, Bandwagon. Google it, it's worth your time and money.

Some people keep their band so tight (on purpose) so they physically can't eat foods like bread, rice, paster. The band is not meant to stop you from eating anything. Some want the band to phsically prevent them from eating foods so they don't have to use will power. That is the wrong mentality.

I think it's important to realize and embrase that this will be a will power diet for the most part until you get restriction. You have to choose to eat an apple for dessert instead of an apple pie. Even now at restriction I have to decide to eat healty foods and not junk food.

I am on the other side of the fence with this one. I have to keep my band on the tighter side to help me recognize when i am done eating.

At first i was on a 1000-1200 cal a day intake. I wasnt losing anything

However i have medical issue one being hypothyroidism so my body naturally has a slow metabolism

When i cut back to 800 cals i started seeing the numbers go down

Also i walk 3 miles aday an drink my Water.

But for my its the amount of calories that make the difference

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
