(Sorry If This Is Gross, But) I'm Getting Insane "slime" In My Mouth. Post Op 36 Hours...

Recommended Posts

Im nearly 36 hours post op, and have a few questions...

I'm geting this insane "slime" in my mouth. Not to much a phlem, but an over all nastyness that I have to spit up or clear out of my throat. Is this normal? Thought or suggestions?

I can NOT stay awake. I'm assuming it's the pain meds they have me on (hydros), but am worried about laying in one position too long. Will sleeping so much mess anything up?

Also - I'm having a VERY hard time drinking enough fluids. The pain and sleepyness just kills any desire to drink. The only thing I want to do is brush my teeth, shower and sleep!

Yesterday, I had 64 oz of Fluid. Today, I'm probably hovering around 24...

Thanks for any suggestions!

Did you receive an incentive spirometer? That is a device that is used after surgery to " excerise" your lungs. I too was very gird and slept a lot the days after surgery. You sure got more fluids down than I did. Maybe the "slime" is more of phlegm. Try doing some coughing, that should bring up anything.

I have been going through the same as you. My gas pains seem to be worse today. I've been very sleepy myself and having a hard time getting fluids in as well.

I am day five and got sick today due to my dehydration. I had to not take pain mess and stay awake just to force Fluid. I think it will get better for us in a day or two!

Did they put something in your band at surgery? They had me unfilled web band was put in for one month and slowly filled it. I'm concerned that you are all ready sliming. Please call your doctor. Look for Liquid Protein and maybe check out those coconut waters that have hydrating stuff with potassium. You don't want to get dehydrated...please be careful.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
