What To Eat On Cruise 30 Days Post Op?

Recommended Posts

I was banded on Tuesday and I'm going on a 5 day cruise 30 days after my surgery. Really not ideal but I had planned this trip a year ago. My band is unfilled. My surgeon and nutritionist said I will be on soft foods/normal foods by then.

My concern is, i saw no healthy food on my last cruise. I've already decided I will not be drinking any alcohol on the cruise, and no grazing at the buffet. What foods will keep me full but are "safe" for a very new bandster? For the formal sit down dinners, is it ok to have Soup as an appetizer or will that leave no room for meat and veggies?

Any tips are much appreciated.

On my cruise they had an omelet bar, and made to order eggs. Ask for egg whites.

Sit down meals tended to be healthier. Also while there are lots of food choices I found the actual serving sizes to be small.

I would do salad as the app. Dressing on side.

Have u talked to your surgeon about going on vacation? I ask about going to stay in cabin at Pigeon forge Tn and they told me not for at least 6 weeks. I had to reschedule mine, not sure your options but a cruise is different atmosphere so I would definitely ask them if u haven't about their suggestions! Good luck, be safe, n have fun!

There are plenty of healthy choices in cruises, just eat 3x a day as you would at home, choose fruits and eggs for Breakfast, salads and meats for lunch, and Soups, veggies and seafoods for dinner and you should do great. At 1 month post op you just gotta make choices as if you were on any other diet, as you probably will not feel restriction yet. The best advice I could give you (coming from a frequent cruiser) is stay away from the midnight buffet!!!!!! Lol

It's sooooo tempting but so much junk food it's insane!!!!

I had a cruise scheduled when I was approved for surgery, but I delayed my surgery until after we returned. Anyway, 30 days post surgery, you'll probably be able to eat just about anything you want, you just need to watch the portion sizes. Don't stuff yourself. Try to stick to less than a cup per meal and you should be okay. I'm in the green zone now, and I now know it would have been easier to cruise at 30 days post surgery than it would be now!! I'm still adjusting to the things I can no longer eat and it's trial and error. Unfortunately, the "errors" usually only happen after I've swallowed something I shouldn't.

I've been on 3 cruises since being banded 2 1/2 yrs ago. The first one, I actually lost a couple of pounds! The dining room always has a healthy choice at every meal - and their portions aren't huge (I couldn't finish one, but I felt stupid asking for a doggy bag!). For breaskfast every morning, we went to the buffet and I ate oatmeal, eggs, and yogurt.

You'll get so sick of the sight of food that it won't look that great by day 3! Good luck to you! Have fun!

Thank you so much for the suggestions everyone! I love going on cruises and this has put my mind at ease.

And yes, my surgeon said it is fine for me to go on the cruise four weeks out, as long as I don't try to overdo it, and chew well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
