Post Op Bill For $75,000...freaking Out!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

So I got a bill in the mail today from my surgeons office with two bills to the amount of $75,000, and I nearly passed out. My surgeon does bot participate in my insurance plan, but he accepts it. I was told that after I was approved (GHI/BCBS/Emblem Health) I would get checks in the mail from the insurance company and have to endorse them, and then send then to the surgeon. I received two checks, one for $303 and one for around $2,500. The surgeons office included a copy of my claim to the insurance company, which basically showed that's all that was covered. I don't know what to do and I'm panicking.

Can someone please help me understand if this is correct, or if my insurance just needs to send more checks? I'm freaking out and I was told I was approved, so this really scared me. Any advice you can offer is much appreciated, thank you!!!

-Britt

U should definatly call and talk with your insurance company. If they are participating they should be accepting the allowed amount set by the insurance. Im sure if you call the insurance and probabley the surgeon office they will be able to explain why the amounts are differing so much and they will hopefully advise u that the numbers should be matching more closley as things keep processing. Good Luck!

My guess is that you'd get a very large sized check from bcbs. I know the place I go to had said bcbs will send a check and they MUST bring it in and write it over to them. If the patient deposits the check then they charge them the full amount. They work "out of network" and don't negotiate with the insurance companies and then they write off the balance. Hope that helps but you may wanna make a phone call or two. I personally don't have bcbs.

Good Luck! I was told my insurance fully covered the surgery and then I got an $82,000 bill which insurance covered most of it but a little over $4,000.. So I was not expecting to even get that amount :(

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
