I Knew I'd Established A New Life After Surgery When:

Recommended Posts

Not the best title but wanted to leave this open ended. Anyone have watershed moments when you realized; you've changed your behaviors/outlook for good?

Today at a job interview I was asked "So what do you do in your time off?"

First thing that came to mind was the amount of time I spend at the gym/working out. I answered "To be truthful, I'm a bit of a gym rat". To which the interviewer said "Well that's a good thing right?"

When exactly did this become a reality? Not exactly what I would said (not to mention believable) when I weighed close to 380 pounds.

I thought this thread would be good for those in Pre Op or recently had surgery. Any happy thoughts out there?

ye. i have thoughts. it became a reality for me when i was able to walk without pain. When i was able to get in and out of the car without being slow and awkward.. when i looked in the mirror and saw my own natural features staring back at me for the first time in nearly twenty years. When i get up of a morning and feel really positive that i can cope now with my responsibilities. Its been wonderful. Plus ive had numerous comments on my appearance which has helped to buoy me up immensely.

When the nurse at my surgeons office asked me where I needed to lose the last 15 lbs. She thought my legs wouldn't be able to hold me up if I lost anymore weight!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
