Long story short, I'm 18 weeks pregnant. Lap band has been a little crazy through out pregnancy, goes from super loose to extremely tight for no known reason. I had an appointment for an unfill on Wed but did so well the week before (no stuck episodes, everything going down easily) so I cancled. Last night in the middle of the night I woke up coughing and threw up. First time that has ever happened. I knew I would be crazy tight this morning so I waited until 11 to try anything at all. I drank 2 sips of milk and immediately threw it up. I was that tight! I waited a couple of hours and tried one teaspoon of Water. That went good so I sipped a little. After 15 minutes or so that came up too! I really thought I would be a lot looser tonight so I held out for that. Normally no matter what has gone on during the day by 7 I am so loose that I can get mushies down at least. I tried Tomato Soup and threw that right up. I am so tight now that I am having to spit out my siliva. I called my dr and talked to the oncall dr. He was really rude (which I understand) and pretty much said well its your fault you didn't call during the day, if you want an unfill find an ER to do it. I have called every er around and they all say that they won't touch lap bands and the best they can offer is a IV.

I have no idea what to do! My dr doesn't open again until monday. Any advice or tricks to get this thing loosened up? I know this is completely my fault, I just have no idea what to do now! Thank you in advance for any help!

Allison

hey, congrats on you bundle of joy. you know al the throwing up could be just morning sickness. make an appointment with your doctor let him know whats going on, and see about unfilling, if the vomiting does not stop, then the best answer would be morning sickness.. My cousins friend had the band, then got prego, and she got sick as well, come to find out it as morning sickness, and everything went well with her band. Best of luck.

Hey sweetie, don't panick, the band is tightening up because of the fluxation of your body fluids u can go for a few days without eating. But you don't want to get dehydrated. If you feel that you are. Go to the ER and get an I.V.. Sometimes my band tightens up and if I sip hot tea or broth it will help lossen it up. And I mean sip. Another thing you can try is suck ice chips, Relax stress doesn't help. your baby will be fine. I have eight kids, pregnancy is amazing, babies are way tougher than us mommies give them credit for.

Good Luck

Amy

Sounds awful. I know many lapband docs will remove all Fluid when you're pregnant, probably to prevent this exact thing. Make an appointment with him to have your fluid removed (baby is more important now). As to loosening the band, drink warm liquids and try not to stress. For me, stress makes me tight so I'm sure it's not helping you.

It might be time to look for a different doctor...there is no valid excuse for a physician to be rude to a patient who is in distress. It would be nice for everyone if everything, including emergencies could be scheduled in advance so that no one would ever be inconvenienced.

The fact is that you are paying for the services of your physician, and they have a responsibility to care for your medical needs. No excuses.

Thank you all for being so nice. I am going to try some ice chips and see if they will go down. If not I'll try broth. I was really stressing about this but I feel better now. I'm going to get some sleep and hopefully things will be better in the morning!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
