Surgery Scheduled, Started The Pre-Op Diet!

Recommended Posts

I am sooooo excited to have found this site! I am scheduled for surgery in two weeks and ready to go... a little nervous of course. Still a little shocked that the insurance didn't even fight it! I guess that's a wake-up call all in itself. Obviously, my health is at stake here.

I am ready to get HEALTHY! I have never been skinny and although it will be nice, my first goal is feeling better and getting my health in order. The pre-op diet sucks, but I know it's important and it will make the post-op diet easier to follow.

Good luck to everyone that is going through this journey. Yay for us, we are taking our lives back!!!! :D

I just got approval Thursday and was also surprised that the insurance approved it without a fight. I don't meet all the qualifications but had lots of supporting documentation. I start my preop diet on Tuesday... not looking forward to it. I eat fresh and healthy every day. What I have to eat seems too chemical for me.

Congrats to you! How exciting.

I was banded on Tuesday and feeling pretty good. The post op diet has so far been much easier than pre op. Wish you a quick recovery.

It all starts tomorrow and then it will seem more real. Was given verbal approval but will feel better once I actually get the written authorization. Not looking forward to the next two weeks of restrictions but I guess it will be a good practice run.

I'm so glad to hear from everyone! It has been 5 days since I started my pre-op diet and it has definitely been a little bit of a challenge. I have been good, but I don't really like the Protein shakes much and they tend to leave me feeling pretty hungry...

Does anyone have a Protein shake that they like or that does the job??? I'm open to suggestions.

I was banded on May 10th. I lost 20 pounds on my pre-op diet. I am finding it difficult to down the Protein I am supposed to get every day. I am tired of sweet drinks. I have some Soups and sip on chicken broth a lot.

I am almost pain free today. My incisions are 1-2 ". I thought they would be smaller. Most of the pain seems to be at the port site.

I like the costco brand Premier Protein shakes, they have 30 grams of protein. I am also eating Proti soups. My doctor wants me on this for 4 more weeks,. 6 weeks of all liquids- I am going to go nuts! lol! can't wait to start feeling normal again and live a normal life! Good luck!

I agree, the shakes are too sweet! I can't believe I'm even saying that as sweets are a fav of mine, but I find that I can't finish them sometimes. I have lost 10 lbs. on the pre-op diet so far (only a week in). I hope the insurance company doesn't catch wind of that or they might revoke my approval :D !

I know it seems tough right now, but it's gonna be soooo worth it in the end! Keep your head up, you're doing GREAT! :P

I will be having surgery Tuesday the 22nd of May so am into my pre-op diet and 1st week was awesome but 2nd week is tuff I would be ok if I could have at least some vegetables every now and again for something different than just shakes but I agree it will all be worth it in the end. I have lost 10 pounds so far on the preop diet so that is exciting for me. Good luck to everyone.

Angfay - You're almost there! I am allowed vegetables and a little fruit as well as one lean meat a day so I guess I shouldn't complain! The second week is getting a little easier for me. Good luck to you! You're gonna do GREAT!

So, Friday will be here before I even know it! I have to work the next two nights and then I'm off to Phoenix on Thursday with surgery on Friday! The pre-op diet is becoming so normal that I don't even notice it much anymore.

I'm sooooooo excited and my patient advocate is so awesome she just makes me feel so much better about everything. I hope everyone has someone that they can talk to about this that has been through the process. If not, there's this site for sure!

YIPEE!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
