Intro & A Couple Of Questions

Recommended Posts

I already posted in the insurance forum, but figured I might as well post here, too. :)

I have my first consult? I guess you would call it in the beginning of June and the seminar at the end of June.

I was curious as to what is actually considered a co-morbidity at this point. High triglycerides? Fatty liver? Depression? I mean, I know about the most common ones, but I am curious as to what else the insurance company might take into consideration. I have BCBS Anthem, Cali.

Anyway, I am excited, thinking that with help from this surgery I can finally have my life back in a number of ways. :) I can be healthy for myself, my husband, my kids... and so much more.

my insurance said sleep apnea was a co-morbidity. Basically anything that can be caused by being overweight. My insurance didn't think my herniated disc was a co-morbidity..though I bet if i weighed 100lbs lighter it wouldnt affect me the same, nor do I think I'd necessarily have it.

I also have BCBS and the only co-mo that i have is high cholesterol. I did the sleep test and did not have any problems. My BMI is 35 so from the BCBS website it says you need 2 co-mo. I was sure that I was going to be turned down and I got approved last Friday. What do you have going on? Did your doctor ask for a sleep test? What is your BMI? if over 40 you dont need any co-mo with BCBS.

You are so lucky you have BCBS. They seem like the best insurance. From all I read you will be fine especially with apnea which is considered serious. I have UHC and they said only "serious " co-morbidities would work which they get to determine what is serious. Basically it was diabetes, hypertension, or apnea is all they would accept under 40 and for 5 years and you had to have two of then!! I have insulin resistance taking metformin for, high cholesterol , triglycerides , and reactive airway. Not good enough after 3 appeals. Anyhow good you have BCBS and sure you will get through approved. Good luck

You should be fine. I hear that the sleep apnea is a direct relation to weight and is so dangerious. My doctor told me that if my test came back that I had sleep apnea that I would definitly be approved. I did not not even have one of the main comorbidties and BCBS still approved me based on my BMI and when the letters written by the psycolgist and nutritionist. Has all your paperwork been submitted to insurance yet?

BCBS is requiring that I have it done at the main hospital too which makes it more money but it will still be an outpatient proceedure I think.

Yeah I was approved just waiting for my case worker to call me with a date. My surgeon will get me in and out within four hours.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
