Flying With The Band

Recommended Posts

Just an FYI for new bandsters ...

So .... im 8 weeks post op and I had to take a flight yesterday. I flew from Baltimore to ATL, then from ATL to Memphis .... I swear as soon as we took off and my ears popped .... I felt the band kinda tighten. Not in a painful or uncomfortable way .... but in a way where I could tell the difference because it seemed harder for me to swallow, and I felt a slight tightness in my chest.

I can't really tell if its still tight, as I haven't really eaten today, but I know that I didn't feel that change in tightness on the 2nd flight .... I'll keep you posted :)

YES...... I have to fly to all my band appointments and for work. The band does get tight and for me I have had a few times where it wouldn't losen for a few days. I always go back to warm liquids until it losens and eat/drink things that act as diuretics to help get Fluid off me and that seems to help the band losen.

I travel quite a bit and have been through almost every single body scanner on the market. I've never had a problem. You have nothing to worry about and you don't have to say anything to the TSA.

There are some things I never think about until I read someones post. Now I will know what to expect and not to freak if I feel my band get tighter. Thanks.

I also didnt have any problems going through security.

ShuckyBucky, I like my band tight actually .... I only have 3.75 in a 11cc band, so anything that gives me more "restriction" is welcomed! I don't drink warm liquids to loosen anything.

Going through security is never a problem and I fly a lot. I get reflux when my band gets to tight so I try to keep it from getting to that point.

Going thru security not a problem....but did get a stuck episode after flying. you must be careful and listen to your body...everyone reacts differently. i am very cautious now when flying.

Nope I didnt get stuck, after I landed I waited about 3 hours and then went to macaroni grill. I had the chicken and shrimp penne Pasta and had about 10% of my plate. The next day I only had liquids up until dinner time (protein shake for Breakfast, and Soup for lunch)and I was fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
