Gaining Weight Due To Health Problems....help!

Recommended Posts

I had my lapband done in June 2009. Almost 3 years! My problem is that over the last year I've had some major health problems and have gained back 54 pounds!!! I've had 2 surgeries in that time. Both were for cyst removals, one on my breast (major yuck!!) and one on my shoulder. Both took quiet a while to heal and I wasn't able to exercise while healing. I've also had severe back problems during this time. I'm having an MRI done tomorrow and nerve induction tests done next week. They think I have Degenerative Disc Disease and pinched nerves.

I have to say that during the surgeries I couldn't cook for myself and my husband did feed me but mostly Soups. It was things that I could have but not what I should've ate all the time but I wasn't in any shape to argue. I can cook now I just have to try to hurry because my back hurts so much. I'm eating what I'm supposed to but it's still hard to lose. I miss my elliptical!!

Anyway, since it's so hard for me to do exercise, what suggestions do y'all have? I really want to lose this weight I've regained and it's driving me nuts!!

Ah, I feel for you. As for exercise, I have a friend who is having knee surgery soon and has a hard time exercising too. She is able to us a peddler that she bought at Costco.com. She really likes it. Maybe that would would for you too.

I had my band at the same time as you. I also had major surgery last year ( a hysterectomy ) and was limited with what I could do for 6 weeks. I must be lucky as my husband also cooked but he can manage more than Soup so the food I ate was not that different to usual. I didn't pick up any weight. I think for me the food is more important than the exercise. I can maintain easily without exercising but if my band is not properly filled I get hungry and start falling back into bad habits like snacking.

I suggest you go back to the Dr to check that you are correctly filled. Go through some recipe books and find recipes that are easy to cook ( for you or your husband) that fit in with your diet. As to exercise how about swimming? Swimming is generally good as it takes all the weight and strain off joints and muscles.

Go back to basics like right after surgery. I dont excercise a lot but Im losing because I watch my calories. If you are sedentary you need to eat less then you would if your exercising.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
