Hear that doughy bread can be difficult to get down and at church today, I realized communion might be an issue. We don't do wafers, we do white bread torn into pieces, but it is doughy. We dip it in the "wine" before eating it.

Thoughts?

I don't want to get stuck at church!

I had the same thoughts but dumb me didn't think about it until we were in church that evening right before taking Communion. I was fine, but if your really worried about it give your Pastor a call and explain the situation.

I would think one small bite will probably be okay. Chew it very well.

Skip the communion! I wouldn't take the risk of getting stuck.

A lot of it depends on your level of restriction and the size of the bread they use for the service. Do they tear it in advance or do you tear it as they hand it out? If you tear it, you could take a tiny piece near the crust. Otherwise, I like the idea of speaking to your pastor, you might be able to take communion in private with him or perhaps they have an alternative to the bread you can use.

Seems to me God and Jesus will understand if you cannot partake of the bread, far better that than running out in the middle of service to urp up the body of Christ. (Honestly, no disrespect intended). There are Christians who cannot chew or take solids of any kind. Accommodations are made all the time, I am sure. Speak with your pastor, and don't feel guilty. You are making your body that was given to you by God more healthy, it is a great way to say thank you.

In our church we use wafers, except for on Maundy Thursday, but it didn't bother me. If you are worried, speak with your pastor and ask for a private communion for the first time and every time you have a fill from now on. Hopefully he/she will understand and grant that wish, I know mine would be completely understanding of it :) Good luck!

I was banded on April 10th. Two weeks ago was my first day back at church. It was very hectic- I was helping the children's choir, who were singing for first communion. I went up for communion in a rush, and without thinking, took the host, and swallowed it. No chewing, just the way I have done it for 35 years. Well, it got stuck, and I panicked.. I had told myself that I wasn't going to take the host, and then I forgot. I freaked out for a minute, but then I was able to stand up and move around for a minute, and it passed. But boy, When I start taking the host again, I will chewchewchew before I swallow., yikes!

I was banded on 4/13 and have not taken communion since. I plan to eventually but not for a while. We use a gluten free bread due to gluten allergies in our congregation.

My pastor knows that I am not able to have communion but I do go forward for a blessing. Since I am a member of our worship "team" (I run our projector) I receive communion at the beginning of the meal. This puts me in front of everyone and they see that I am not receiving communion. I have been open with everyone about my surgery so I don't have a problem with this. It is also something to consider for yourself.

Today we had a guest pastor and I simply said I am not able to take communion at this time, no problem, he gave me a wonderful blessing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
