I have the same question actually. I also use MyFitnessPal to track all intake. I am averaging about 800 calories daily. I had my lap band surgery May 1st. I do get hungry from time to time but not ravenous. TV ads for food kill me. But, everytime I feel like eating I go look at my surgery wounds. :)

I am thinking 800 is going to be to little and our bodies will go into starvation mode and we wont keep losing. I have been trying to search and find out the right answer. I know its all according to your weight age height etc... I did find a forumal for it here the other day and it actually came out to being close to what myfitnesspal says i should be getting.

I do between 1200-1400. There is no magic number, and the metabolism will start to slow on a super low calorie diet. What people call "starvation" mode is just this, because the body learns where it can cut corners to conserve calories. I have always heard to stay above 1200 to make sure the metabolism is running strong, but I don't think that should be your only concern.

My dietician didn't set a guideline for me; instead, I told her I was trying for 1200 and she asked if I felt ok there. Listen to your body and your particular situation to make a decision. The only problem with programs like MFP is that they don't take WLS into account.

I guess my only piece of advice is to listen really well to your body and make sure that the calories that you are eating are nutritious and satisfy your protein/fiber needs. Pay attention to how you feel throughout the day (tired, sluggish?) and adjust from there. Unfortunately, there's no science for this :)

My nutritionist advised me not to count calories, just eat small, nutritious meals. I think I'm getting roughly 1200 to 1500 calories/day, but she said I should be losing more. It's definitely a fine balancing act. I'm going to continue eating the same way and increase my exercise and see what happens.

I am a week out having trouble reaching 1200 calories. I dont have any desire to eat so I try to add things to try to reach my goal but i barly hit 1000 calories a day and i know that is to low. I was hoping today with mushies to get more calories but so far have only done 360 calories and had breakfest and lunch and not desired any Snacks.< /p>

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
