Restriction In Morning, Not In Evening?

Recommended Posts

ive read where sometimes the band can loosen somewhat later in the day. Also, having a hot drink before hand, or having some alcohol helps to ease it as well.

Please don't take this comment as judgmental - I just have to speak to the suggestion that having some alcohol helps dealing with restriction fluctuations. I can't imagine any medical reason or believe that any doctor would endorse the idea that alcohol would help. It's a diuretic, it's a gastric irritant, and if it "helps", that's probably because it makes you care less about eating problems, not because it actually fixes them. Finally, alcohol is empty calories and loosens inhibitions, so that taking an extra bite or an extra serving that you don't need suddenly seems like a fine idea.

Just my opinion, mind you, but I speak from experience!

I am sure glad to see this post...I thought I was the only one with this issue! I've had problems with night eating for the past few months, not because I'm particularly hungry, but because there's no stop signal. Learning to recognize head hunger vs real hunger is still something I struggle with, but I'm getting better at telling the difference. I'm glad I'm not alone!

Here is what I use to help me determine if I am really hungry....would I eat a can of green Beans right now? If I would, then I am truly hungry. If not, then perhaps I am just looking to graze, and the desire to eat needs more consideration.

A can of green Beans? I love that! Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't eat a can of green beans if you paid me, so for me, that's a great "test" of hunger!

It really works for me. Sometimes my answer is, "yes, I would." Slam dunk that I need food. Other times my answer is, "no, I really, really want that bag of Dorritos in the machine in the break room." Well, ok, maybe not true hunger. Maybe I am starting to get hungry, but the junk demons are calling first. So can I stave them off with something else? A glass of Water, might I be thirsty? A cheese stick? They are a bit salty. Maybe a slice of deli meat, or a few crackers. Or can I wait until my meal-time. My surgeon is not against a healthy snack if it is planned or truly needed.

Asking the question at least makes me stop and think before grabbing the bag of Dorritos and eating it brainlessly.

I have always had a problem with eating at night. I can't sleep so I think if I eat I will be able to. I love the idea of the list of ten things that don't include food! I will try that and if that doesn't work I will eat a can of green beans!

thanks for your input on your experiences. i have to say though that i still have no ability to take any extra in, even if ive had a glass of red. If IVe had enough, Ive had enough. If i try, i suffer. :)

In defense of the alcohol suggestion, I believe a cocktail can relax the band in the evening before dinner. But, each to their own? It did help me! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
