Post Surgical Gas Won't Go Away!!

Recommended Posts

I am 3.5 weeks post-op and this gas is killing me! I have walked, taken Gax-X, drank Peppermint Tea, lie on my bed in ridiculous positions...nothing is helping. It goes away briefly, then comes back with a vengence and the pain is unbearable! I am so afraid to eat anything, for fear of the affect it might have. I'm not sleeping well, I have severe back pain, so along with the gas, I'm having to take advil for the pain. This is horrible. Does anybody have any suggestions? I am trying to stay positive, but every day I feel like this, I am regretting getting the band. I am normally a glass half full kind of person and I RARELY get sick. Even being overweight, my only health issue was my weight, so I am just unsure as to what I am doing wrong! All I know is that I am starting to become depressed because I feel like I can't get better. I'm stressed, missing work...and it is feeling like more of a headache than it should be. The other day I spent an hour in bed just crying, because I felt so horrible and nothing seemed to be helping. Is this just a phase and will it get better???

Where is the pain? Do you still have your gallbladder?

And is your surgeon aware that you are in so much pain?

It is right in themiddle of my chest...it almost feels like i have a bouy floating inside of me. My surgeon thinks it is gas, but it is getting worse...I will be trying to get in to see him this week.

Yes, on the days I can actually walk, I have been walking. Some days, the pain is so bad, I can barely stand upright

I would insist on either your surgeon or your primary doc checking into this further. You could have a hiatal hernia, reflux, or any number of things going on. You shouldn't be having this much almost a month post op

..how are your bowels working? i know that my bowels didnt work so well and that aggravated the gas problem a lot. If your arent all that regular, perhaps you should be taking something to help them along??

This happened to one of my friends and to me. Nothing helped, but after a month it finally went away. Hang in there!

Thank you for all of the input and support. I actually ended up in the ER on Saturday and they admitted me. It seems to be a combination of things. The Constipation from the pain meds aggravated the incision sites, well the muscle underneath. It also contributed to the gas. Additionally, my not eating enough, for fear of getting sick, did not help matters. I am back home now, and officially on Short Term Disability until I feel 100% and can go back to work. The good thing is that they did a scan while in the hospital, my band is where it needs to be. So hopefully, by the time I go in for my first fill on the 24th, I will be OK!

I have them! I went through Colace, and Enema and Suppositaries...but once I was in the hospital, they gave me the world's biggest enema...and that worked it out. (Sorry for the TMI)

i know that treatment is rather gross but it does the trick. Im glad that you have the suppositaries. Im sure you will find them o.k. once you get used to using them. i use them a lot. Especially since banding, as i dont want to upset my whole digestive system. You will find that the suppositaries will move the wind as well. Can i ask you... what is the name of the suppositaries that you have??

You know what helped me out with my Constipation and gas after surgery was a little metamucil in my crystal light I drank it 3 times Sunday and I finally had a bm monday and tuesday and that's around the time my gas went away since I could finally get it out sorry TMI lol drinkin it too often tho gives me the runs so I only do it when I feel a bit backed up. My nutritionist says its safe to use just mix it in with a large bottle of Water I usually make a 24oz bottle of crystal light and add 1 teaspoon Metamucil

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
