Hi Dannygirl,

I'm being banded in Monterrey, Mexico by Dr. Roberto Rumbaut. The cost will be $10,600 which includes everything but my airfare and food. The hotel is covered, anesthesia is covered, transfers to and from airport and hotel and hospital are covered, any problems with the band, erosion, leak, infection all covered in that $10,600. Dr. Rumbaut will do all fills or even remove the band if necessary in that same $10,600 - for the life of the band - in other words, foreveer. I know Mexico sounds very scary but the hospital has an extremely good reputation and is very modern - I understand this is the hospital designated to care for the U.S. President in case of emergency when he's in that area - and Dr. Rumbaut has done THOUSANDS of lap-band surgeries, has a below average percentage of complications - less than 1% - and is banded himself. He TAUGHT a lot of the surgeons in the U.S. who are now doing the surgery. If you want more information his website is www.gastricband.com.

Good luck to you on journey whatever path you choose.

Dannygirl welcome! Tell us what area you are living. That way maybe a surgeon might be closer to you. Lapbanding takes some maintenance with fills/unfills. It makes it more convenient, if problems should arise, to find someone within driving distance. :)

I live in utah. I havent researched it much here, but from what I know it is very expensive anywhere in the US. How much does a fill cost w/out insurance? Does anyone know anyone who has had complications with the band. Besides throwing up?

Check out Dr. McKeen at www.southbaybariatrics.com

His main office is in San Jose Calif. but flies his cash patients to his office in Utah for banding due to the hospital cost being cheaper in Utah.

I believe the total cash cost is about 14,500.

Be presistant with your calls there they have been very busy. PM if you want more info. and good luck!

Hi,

I was banded on 2/6/06 by Dr. Michael Snyder in Denver, CO. He is awesome! I have lost 23 pounds in 23 days. I too was a self pay, the total he charges for lap band is 12,700. If you would like to research it, the website is www.denverbariatrics.com. You do have to attend his seminar, and for out of town patients, they set your 1st appt. around the same time as the seminar so you don't have to come back again. Check it out, he is wonderful, and not too far from Utah! Good luck!

What ever you decide, make sure you do your research. Going to a doctor that you have to fly to gives you the same followup issues as those banded in another country.

Who ever you chose, make sure you have a doctor locally that will do your fills/emergency care and any other followup you need.

I was Banded in Mexico, but I have a local doctor that I spoke to before surgery to do followup. I have a local fill center for fills. The nutrisionist at Dr. Rumbauts office and I still keep in contact via email. So far, the only thing that didn't work for me was the support group I signed up for at the local hospital was for bypass patients.

I am not telling you to go to Mexico or not to a certain doctor. You need to do RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH and make the decision that is best for you.

Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
