What Size Portions Were You Eating Between Surgery And Your First Fill?

Recommended Posts

Im on mushies and purees and i know im eating mucccccccccch less than before my band...

last night for dinneer i had a 3oz grilled tilapia filet, then had 1 cup mash potatoes with applesauce mixed in, but only ate about 2/3 of it. I felt satisfied, but not full...i felt good. but in my head i think its too much...is it?

my doc told me that once i go on solids, if i am able to eat a whole burger patty, i should get a fill. to me that would mean 3 oz patty, so does that mean that if i can eat a 3 oz grilled fish fillet (mashed up really good or pureed, before starting solids) that i should need a fill? or is it just when i am eating that portion of things like pork, chicken, beef.....when i asked her this question..her response was .... when you are eating an amount that causes you to stop losing, then get a fill. well considering that i use to eat a 1lb patty plus bun and fixings and fries just two months ago...i would think that eating even as much as a 6oz patty without the bun and fixings, i would still lose ... so which do i go by

how do you decide when you are ready for a fill?

My nutrionist told me no more than 1 cup of food total.

But also keep in mind, you're still in the healing phase and right now you need to concentrate on healing more than weight loss. Also keep in mind you haven't had a fill yet, and once you start getting them and have some restriction, you'll be able to eat even less.

I think you're doing great :)

I wouldnt go by the amount of food youre eating. You should factor in your weight loss, and how long it takes you to get hungry after a meal. If youre hungry in 2 hours, get a fill. If youre hungry in 4 hours and youre still losing weight, you should be just fine.

I haven't yet been banded, so take my response witha grain of salt!

My understanding is you get fills when your weight loss stalls and you need more restriction. You want to be restricted to about 1/2 cup of food at a time. If you are still hungry after eating that much you probably need a fill. This is of course, after you've received your first fill. It sounds likeitusually takes 3-4 fills to get to the green zone (or ideal restriction level).

I ate the potatoes and fish about 5pm and at 8 i was hungry and had 1 cup of pudding, and was good for the night. earlier in the day tho.. i had a 11 oz Protein drink, at 7 a.m and lunch i had just a fish fillet (3oz) at about 1230...so i am going anywhere from 3-5 hours without being hungry, so i guess im doing ok.

my doc weighed me on may 1 and i was down 4.4 lbs from the 24th suregery was 26th....i weighed myself yesterday and was down anohter 1.4 lbs..but am trying to make srue i dont weigh more often than once a week lol...so im staying off of it til next thursday.

in my mind..going by if im losing is what i would use to decide on a fill or not...she did not schedule me a fill she just said that as long as its 3 wks after surgery, and then went into if im eating the full patty and in email said if im no longer losing..lol

If you just had surgery you won't get your first fill til 3-4 weeks after. So currently you are able to eat as much as you did prior to surgery as you have no liquid in your band to restrict you. After your fill, you should be able to take in up to 4 ozs of food per meal which is a half cup with 2ozs being Protein. I haven't been really hungry between meals or when it's time to eat but I have been eating because I know I have to.

My doctor told me not to exceed 1/4 cup (2oz) at one sitting for the first month after the band. He reasoned that although the pouch he created can hold 1/2 cup (4 oz) that while I am healing to fill the pouch could tear the sutures that he put in place on the fold that went over the band to hold it in place.

I always see people eating more than that. I have stuck to the 2 0z...but check with your doctor as my doctor may have been trying to scare me straight. I am self pay and I can't afford a revision. Either way more than a cup a time seems excessing for your little baby pouch...be careful. I always hate that our docs give us so much conflicting info.

Thanks and yes your doctor may have been scaring you as my doctor and nutritionist said 4ozs but that does not necessary means you have to eat that much. I also have a ton of reading material that suggest the same. Good luck on your journey.

He said that after my first fill on May 7th that i can graduate to 1/2 cup...can't wait! Although I guess I haven't been hungry on the 1/4 cup. but my weight loss slowed down majorly the past 2 weeks.

My doc had me eat Protein first at meals. i was doing 4 oz protein + 1/4 c vegetable - no starches. I had a fill this week and restarted 2 dy liquid, 2 day mushies. After this fill I am to continue the 4 oz, 1/4 veg and report next month on how long I stay full.

I can do about 3 hours between meals, and have a FF pudding, 1/4 c cottage cheese, etc. as a mid morning and evening snack.< /p>

As I moved to mushies my doctor said 3 oz of Protein (cottage cheese and ricotta and then the next week I could hve canned chicken or tuna). I would have 8 oz of Tomato Soup for my veggie and then have the protein (the Soup would pass right through the pouch). As I move to solids the I was to have 3 oz of solid protein and then low fat/cal veggies until full. I would eat raw peppers/carrots (as I got closer to restriction I had to eat carrots with hummus) until full. My doctor never gave me instructions to eat by volume (cup).

My surgeon told me he won't fill me until 6 weeks post-op. I have an appointment 3 weeks post-op to see how the healing is, but that's it.

I think this thread is another example how every surgeon, and every nutritionist, have different ideas what food plan should be followed. Some say 1/4 cup, others 1/2 cup, mine 1 cup, and yet others say "don't measure" and just want their patients to eat until they're satisfied.

Always do what your specific surgeon advises during the healing process and I'd at least start your normal food routine with their plans as well. But ultimately, we all have to find our own way and what works best for our body. The only way to do that is through trial and error.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
