I was banded a few weeks ago, still doing mushys. I'm noticing that things don't taste as good to me. My lite lemonade today from McDs was kinda gross. I used to be able to down one of those in no time, wishing I'd got a second one. Other foods just taste off to me. Anyone else going through this?

yes i did. everything tasted very salty to me. dont worry about it... it will pass soon enough. The taste buds get a rude shock for some reason.. lol. I think i had the salty taste and yuk for about two weeks. you may not have it that long. Yes, it is fairly normal.

I don't know if my change was due to surgery or what, but I used to HATE olives before and I love them now...

Oh my, surgery has changed my taste buds immensely! I never touched avocados before and now I love them. I have weird foot cravings and combinations that I never would have tried. I agree with stefy though, I don't know if it was surgery or just my taste buds changing as I've been told they change every seven years.

Your taste buds change and in a sense die throughout your life. For example have you ever noticed that older people seem to crave sweet things? ( I know we all do but in some cases its the only thing they eat) This is because the sugar taste buds are the last to give out so the flavors from other foods are just not as strong. Your body may adjust its carving for specific foods by changing which taste buds are the most active. If you are craving olives it may your bodys way of saying it needs more salt, an imbalance in your Water to salt ratio. Or more of a Vitamin olives are high in.

i agree with this. im finding as i get older that Im craving spicy foods more, so that suggests that the stronger flavours are registering more with my taste buds than a lot of other foods may be. i hate bland foods. so, i push it with chilli, paprika, curry, all that sort of thing. im 66.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
