But How Does It Feel?

Recommended Posts

I've read all different posts here and I'm still so curious. How does it really feel with the band? I've read everything from not being able to swallow anything to just a full feeling after a very small meal. I'm honestly confused how it feels hard to get something down--even Water. The throat isn't smaller, but the stomach is...so why is it hard to swallow for some? Anyway, maybe this is a silly question. I'm scheduled to be banded later this month. Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can share!

To answer some of your questions:-

If you can't swallow it means your band is too tight.

You will not feel full the way you used to. Full is no longer felt in the stomach it is felt in the chest. You want to try to stop eating before you are full as it may feel very uncomfortable.

The band puts pressure on various nerves which gives rise to the sensation of feeling that something is in your throat. It is a referred sensation. Often if you can feel it in your throat it means you have probably eaten too much.

With a well adjusted band you should be satisfied ( not full) after eating a small portion of healthy food (protein/veg/good quality carbs). You should not feel hungry again for an extended period. For some this could be 3 hours for others it is longer. Although you may not technically be hungry you might still desire food. That is because a lot of "hunger" is in your head not your stomach.

The band will not make you magically lose weght. It will not make the correct choices for you and it won't make you exercise. Those things you have to do for yourself.

HTH and keep asking questions.

Everyone is different and every person will tell a different story!! I've been reading threads and thinking " oh god what of I do that!!" Its a learning curve and we all learn and experience at different rates! I can say I feel better now then I ever have. ! I know my band swells in the morning as I feel bloated but not to the extent of pain or uncomfortable ! To be honest 5 weeks in I'm in no pain I'm eating small healthy meals I've lost 19 lbs. I'm working with my wonderfull band not against it , and everyday it teaches me a new way with food and my new life! It's been easier then I thought it would be . Good luck .:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
