Lap Band With Gastric Plication

Recommended Posts

Melinda, we are all human - that is the bottom line regardless of what any doctor says, having this band, or any type of procedure - period. We will have ups and downs and you have obviously done well to lose so much weight - that is a big success in my eyes and I can only hope to have similar results and beyond that with the long term goal I want to achieve. Keep the success in mind and don't let the doctor or the fact that you have had one set back beat you up - I for one look up to you as a role model because of what you have done and the fact that you acknowledge your low points. I'm sure you will come back!! I have a couple questions for the experienced band people - I got my first adjustment this week. Should I still get hungry after a certain time period? I'm talking 5-6 hours.... Also, even after all this time after surgery, I still have more gas than I ever did before having this done. Is that normal? Last, are we not supposed to eat any fruit? How are we supposed to get the Vitamins, Fiber and potassium? For example, I like apples and bananas, but my doctor says NO! What is any one else's experience? Hope all the recent surgery folks are doing well....

How are things with you now? I'm getting this surgery next month? Any information would be great?

It's been 2 weeks for me and I'm feeling good. I've lost some weight already and I started back at the gym again. I can eat a little more now than i could the first week (of course), but I still get full fairly quickly. So far, so good! How's everyone else?

I'm 2 weeks out too! Feeling great. It took me until today to be 100%, I think my hiatal hernia repair was partly to blame. I'm down 19.5 pounds since 5/29 . (8.5 pre-op) I went to lunch with the family today had grilled catfish and some green Beans. I ate about 3oz fish and 6 or 8 green beans and I was satisfied.

I walked 4 miles and hit my elliptical for 1 more. I think the hardest thing is the not drinking with meals, I really struggle with that. I'm hoping to really kick in high gear now that I feel better but can't wait to get cleared to do some weights for toning!

I'm glad you are all well and hang in there Melinda, we are just human. I'm sure you jump right back in!

I was out for a week and everything has been pretty good since. I had my first adjustment on the 5th and have lost 5 lbs since then. Bama, I can certainly agree with your struggle, as that is still mine as well. There are articles on this site I have read that show recent studies indicate drinking should not be a problem while eating, as long as you don't increase the portions of your original meal. Sips here and there are okay, but my doctor is steadfastly against it. I'm glad to hear everyone seems to be doing well - keep up the good work everyone. Melinda, we want to hear from you - please don't beat yourself up and don't let the doctor to that do you either. We are here for you!!!

I had the band with plication 4/18. Fortunately I didnt deal a lot with nausea (recovery room and after car ride home) and the pain didnt require the whole bottle of Roxicet they gave me post op. I stuck with the heating pad, though. A large portion of my pain was the gas pain. Day 1 post op (I count day of surgery as 0 as well) I was seriously second guessing my decision. Luckily it subsided within a week.

Apparently the plication is not only to assist with losing a higher percentage of EBW, but also reduces the risk of gastric prolapse. Yay for us!!

I have lost 34# so far post op (cant get this ticker thing right, obviously since I have 2) and am having a hard time getting my goal calories in. Never thought Id say I need to eat MORE calories! But honeslty when I am consistently closer to my 1100-1200 goal, I lose better. And I have the hard time eating and not drinking as well.

I took 4 weeks off work. It was what was suggested. I am a nurse and lift and push/pull some rather large people (Some 500#+) who are often in a medically induced coma, who cant help me out.

PS: Congrats on doing something good for yourself!

Pandoracat: You are doing great. Keep up the good work. The heating pad was my friend too (much better than the Oxycodone they gave me). Don't let the pad get too far away. The first sticking episode you will need it again - trust me on that one.

Keep doing good...

Bamabander: you are doing soooo good. That is terrific weight loss. Glad to hear you post-op went so good too. Yes, plication has advantages - it reduces the chance of slippage too. As for me I got a fill on Friday of last week and he told me he was cranking it tight - UNDERSTATEMENT ! I have not eaten a meal yet that has not ended in pain, PB, slime and eventually throwing it up. Last night - 1 oz meat, 2 lima Beans and 1/4 c salad...gone after 2 1/2 hours of agony. Protein Shakes today guys ! I have dropped 5 pounds since Friday but part of that is Water weight...I take about 3 hours to drink 1 bottle of water. Looks like I will be going back to doctor on Friday to have some removed...can't go on this way for long without having serious issues. Hey, I feel good though and my attitude in back in gear - thanks to all for their support.

Have a great week everyone.

Hang in there Carolina we are with you. I too had terrible left shoulder pain (like it was broke pain) and the side of my neck - that is some goofy muscle in your abdomen that is pushing on a nerve that runs up to that shoulder and neck. Google shoulder pain after lap band surgery and it explains it. It does go away in a couple of week. Heating pad became my best friend when that was going on. Sorry about the upset tummy. that could be from the anethesia or medicines they gave you. hang in girlie..

Lady Scorpio - thanks for the kind words and the swift kick. I needed both. I am back in gear - super tight (maybe too tight) and have lost 5 pounds in 5 days...can't eat anything without it coming back up - yuck. may have to back off a bit on the band.

Otherwise doing good. take care..

Hey everyone! Glad to hear u all are doing Awesome- :-).

Melinda you are a success and inspiration to us all. No one is going to be perfect on this journey, besides you lost a lot of weight in a short time... That's awesome! Another thing your Dr. Is out of order he does not have the same struggle as u do does he? Has he ever had a weight issue? Probably not so he should really be praising you on your weight loss thus far. You are doing awesome and at least you know what you are doing to gain and you know what to do to lose. Any motivation I'm sure you have all of our support. Ttyl- thanks for being here for us and now we will pay it forward. U got this!

Shy2012 - thanks for your kind words and your encouragement. My doctor is a lap band patient..he has had his band about 4 years and lost 90 pounds..hey, he is a man and you know how fast they loose weight. That is why is went into doing that type of surgery. He used to be a general surgeon. Anyway, I am so tight I eat out of thimble (just kidding of course) but my dog eats more than I do and she only weighs 10 pounds. The scale is moving and so am I. No PB, or slime tonight - I guess I am finally "getting it".

Have a good evening..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
