Has Anyone Had Lapband Surgery With A Heavier Weight/bmi?

Recommended Posts

My weight is 386 lbs, 5 ft 7 inches, and bmi of 60. This is higher than usual for lap band surgery qualification. Did anyone else have lapband surgery with a higher weight/bmi?If so, how were your results? Thank you :)

I have seen multiple people on this forum who have started out at 400 plus pounds and done amazingly well. Good luck to you and don't feel your BMI is too high or out of the ordinary. I don't think it is. The surgery is amazing and has changed my life!!

I just had surgery last week and my BMI was 61. When I started the process, my BMI was 73. The surgeon would have preferred me having gastric bypass or sleeve because the weight loss is faster but when I said no he was fine.

He wanted me to lose 30 pounds before surgery and I blew that away by losing 80. Surgery went well. The biggest issue is the anestiologist and whether they are willing to put you under.

I am sure you will need to have some additional testing but I think a surgeon will do the surgery.

I am very over weight as well and was told I need to lose 30 pounds before surgery. I only have lost 15 so far. Last week my surgeon was pretty stern that I lose another 10 more pounds, I am feeling the stress more so now as this needs to be done by May 24th my next and last weigh in. But, from reading on this site I see many many individuals who are very over weight with high bmi and are doing tremendously well. This gives me very high hopes :)

My bmi was 67 when i first went to see the surgeon, he normalaly only operates on bmi 55 or lower but agreed to operate if i lost enough weight to get down to 60 bmi. I was on a 600 calorie a day diet till surgery lost all the weight i needed about 40lbs in 10 weeks and got the band fitted with no problems at all and the operation was a breeze.

I have lost a total of 237lbs so large weight loss is possible and it didnt take me that long .. if u have to lose all that weight before hand on your own believe me after u get the band fitted losing weight in the long term will seem much eaiser believe me .. going from 600 calories a day to 1000 calories was like eating double of what i had been pre surgery so i never got hungry and lost weight from day 1 .. so good luck !

My BMI was 61. My doctor and my insurance company require that I lose some weight, just to show that I could. I had no trouble with anesthesia putting me down because I dont have sleep apnea, nor do I have a big neck. I am on post op day 14, and I have lost 15 pounds since surgery, and a total of 30 for the entire journey so far. It can be done. I did the two weeks of Protein Shakes prior to surgery, and although I was cranky, it really got me into the right mindframe for what was up ahead.

Hi at consult was 335 and about 57 bmi. I was told to loose 10% body weight. Due to a preexisting blood clot which had to be completely desolved my surgery was postponed. By the time I had surgery, I was done to 282. I am a slow looser but to be at 216.4 is a huge victory for me (prior to deciding on banding I had been at 365 started exercising and eating better which got me down to 335).

Of course speak with your doctor first about what kind of exercise you should try. Personally I highly recommend swimming or Water aerobics for larger people. It is great for your joints. I was having so much pain from my knee I could hardly walk (and I mean hardly). Using a snorkle I was able to swim up to an hour right from the start. I also recommend getting a Water proof MP3 player (check out Amazon), makes time go by so much faster.

At my highest I did'nt own a scale so this is an estimate. At one point my desk was moved from one end of the facility to another. I was now like 1/2 mile from the Cafe. Because I had so much trouble walking I starting bringing Breakfast and lunch. I would say I lost about 20 pounds, just from changing my eating. So I would say I was probably about 385 pounds at that time. So by significantly changing your food habits you will probably loose weight without exercising. However, the more you loose you will eventually need to start exercising to keep loosing.

All this makes me feel much better. I have a bmi of 69 and was beginning to get a little worried because a lot of people on here seem quite a bit smaller than that.

Although, nothing really extra was required of me. The 6 month physician supervised diet, once that was completed I saw the surgeon, got approved though insurance, and surgery is scheduled for June 5th!

I was 380 at 5'5". I did the 2 week Optifast before my surgery on 1/17/12. I was 351 the day of surgery. I am currently 325, so it's working! Slower than I want but getting there! Today is day 4 of walking a mile, I hope this kick starts further loss! I don't want to get discouraged! Good Luck!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
