Wanting to talk about exercize

Recommended Posts

Hi there everyone! This is my first ever post to any "lap band" related site. I was banded on December 14, 2004...just about a year and a few months ago. My beginning weight was 277 and I'm at 206 as of this morning. So I would like to talk with anyone about exercize and what you are doing:faint: Currently I am using an eliptical at the gym for 70 min 3x / week and doing a "Body Pump" class sometimes 2x/week but have a torn rotator cup right now and can't lift much. The eliptical says that I'm buring 1100 cal during my workout plus what ever I'm burning during weight lifting. Does anyone do heavy workouts like this and if you do I need to buddy up with you for support :help: I've been at 210/206 up and down for the last 3 months and with each month passing I get more fustrated because I feel as though I'm doing "enough"...but maybe I'm not and I need to know. My band is at a good fill...I'm not hungry hardly ever. I can't eat large portions/nor bread/chips/crackers:(/and sometimes have a hard time with Protein. I guess I just need input...PLEASE TELL ME .....WHAT MORE SHOULD I DO?

I think for losing weight you need more of a cardio type workout then weights. I do walking and/or biking every other day and that seems to help alot.

ttoofun,

I try to do strength training 1-2 times a week and cardio 2-3 times a week. Today, I did an hour on the recumbent bike and it said I burned 860 calories. I have been thinking about buying an eliptical. How do you like it?

As far as not losing lb's right now... maybe your body is just in a plateau. I hit one for almost two months and was freaking out. Understanding that my body had to adjust to the weight loss helped me come to terms with it. But now I have lost a couple more pounds and they are coming off really slowly now.

One suggestion, maybe you can vary your cardio between treadmill, bike and eliptical or swimming. Maybe that would help your body start burning again.

I used to work out with a personal trainer. Here is some info that she shared with me: Strength training is very important for your body. When you are doing cardio, you only burn calories while your heart rate is elevated (during the activity). With strength training, you are breaking down your muscles and to build back up they have to burn calories. So you burn calories while your body is at rest after weight training. So more lean muscle mass = more calories burned. That is why it is good to not weight/strength train two days in a row.

I try to keep that in mind when I am working out. :)

I'm not at all into that much exercise yet (some day **dream**). But I've seen folks on this board talk about actually needing to INCREASE your calories if you're getting heavy workouts.

Something about "resting metabolic rates" & your body thinking it's being starved.

I have zero clue what I'm talking about, but you might ask your trainer / nutritionist / doctor about it & see if there's a "metabolic breath test" somewhere near you that you could get done to see how many calories you need.

Good luck & let us know how it goes!!

I still do weight training but am limited just because its hard to even lift a coffie cup with that arm right now :)~ Thanks for all of your imput. I think I need to sit down and see how many calories I'm getting in vs burning. Its just strange how one day I can eat good small portions and others...its a struggle to get down 3 bites and get frustrated and just don't eat. The days I workout I don't usually get any food for the day untill about 2 in the afternoon. I may have a Vita Water and 80 oz of reg water during that time. I also have a spinning bike that I use on occasion but I have this huge bruse on my bottom right now lol don't know how I got it. Thinking it was all that fat flappen up and down LMAO! I do know I'm running 5 1/2 miles during my workouts in that hour and 10 min. time. Not too bad for a 206 lb'er :)

I couldn't agree with you more on this. I have a coworker who is facing this same issue. She's seen several exercise and diet specialists who are ALL telling her she's not getting enough to eat. She's ignoring that advice and continues to struggle. I think your body begins to break down muscle to lower your metabolism if it think it's in danger. Perhaps you're in this muscle-burning state as well. I've personally experienced a boost in weight loss on certain "cheating" weeks. I think you're not eating enough. Try eating more (ECSPECIALLY Protein to fortify those muscles, and don't forget to include some carbs to synthesize the protein) for just ONE week and see what happens. I bet you see a drop in your weight.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
