Are ER And Other Specialists Prepared To Handle Lapband Emergencies?

Recommended Posts

You could easily contact the local hospitals and ask if they are equipped to deal with a Lapband related emergency if you had one. This way, you would have piece of mind knowing where you should and should not go. I know of two local hospitals in Portland, Oregon that have bariatric programs (OHSU and Legacy Good Sam). Better to be safe than sorry.

From my experience with my slip last year, there were several hospitals in my area and I intentionally went to one that had a bariatrics program...(not mine). And they would not touch me....I think our best bet is to find local band dr.'s contact them when there is not an emergency....to have a plan if there is an emergency. That being said, I have not done it yet.

With my 4 recent trips to the ER from 2/2/12 to 3/29/12, I would have to say it is VERY important that you go to a hospital that has a Bariatric Surgeon that they can consult with and see you if need be. If they don't know what to look for than you could get misdiagnosed and end up with something more serious.

My Dr told me pre op which hospital's to go to if it became an emergency. I would have to avoid 2 hospital's minutes away and have 2 others 30 mins away. So yes, even my Dr knows not all ERs are prepared for LBS patients.

"Shirlies passing?" Did someone die?

She did. Shirley was a bandster that frequently posted on these forums. She was great with giving and sharing of her lapband knowledge and experience. She is missed by all.

What I recall she went in to the ER with medical/lapband issues and was released once or several times and she did pass. I also recall that she was experiencing other medical problems, but, we never found out exactly what caused her passing.

A couple of things to keep in mind. Lapband patients are many now and hospitals and especially ER's are connected to a bariatric doctor in some form or another. Secondly and I tell you by experience that your body will tell you when something is wrong or the onset of something not right and we must get checked and never accept a doctor's easy way out!

Shirley's dealth was a very unfortunate, but, lapband dealths are very seldom.

Omg! I'm very scared now! I feel awful for Sirley....I was banded on Monday and now I'm freaking out

Try not to freak out. OP even stated that she doesn't know what she died from. Could have been anything.

You're more likely to die from obesity related diseases than LBS. Think on that, you're saving your life by taking control of it.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
