Gall Bladder & Lapband

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever had their gall bladder out then been banded? Is the pain of recovery about the same?

I'll have the lap chole done at the same time as the band. My surgeon was hesitant at first due to the risk of infection. I'd rather risk infection than be under anesthesia twice and another surgery. I had problems last August and nothing really since then. With rapid weight loss, it's sure to come back from what I understand. I'm guessing the pain will be about the same.

I had my gall bladder out back in the 80's when they cut you completely open. So I am pretty sure my lapband surgery will be a lot easier to deal with!

Well I had my gall bladder out 3 years ago and it was such a nice recovery. I was walking up and down stairs that night. Just wondering if that means I'll have an easy recover when I get banded in a few months

Well, I've had my gallbladder out for almost 18 yrs now and had to have an open chole (cuz it was really infected). Stayed in the hospital for 6 days. The band was MUCH easier! Easiest surgery I've ever had, as a matter of fact! Good luck to you!

I had my Gall Bladder taken out back in 1980 so I did not have to go through the procedure before surgery.

I have not had any problems with my lap-band thus far!

I had my gallbladder taken out in December and had an easy time with it. I get the lapband today so I will let you know how it compares.

I have to say thus far the gas pain is much worse. I didn't experience much if any with gall bladder. My gas pain now is very intense and while walking, etc helps a little bit it still is painful. As for the incisons they don't hurt unless you do something stupid like using those muscles too much rather than legs when getting up from a chair etc. That pain is just quick and shooting like with gallbladder surgery.

I had my gallbladder out 5 years ago, and the lap band recovery has been much easier. The biggest issue with my gallbladder recovery was my belly button incision. It was terrible, and got infected.

I had my gallbladder out 3 months or so before I had my band put in about 2 and a half years ago. Honestly I think the gallbladder was worse for me. I remember feeling worse from it than I did with the band surgery. I was in the hospital for at least a few days w/ the gallbladder, but the band surgery was out-patient for me. It may have been because I was a bit sick by the time I got my gallbladder taken care of, I had let it go a little too long because I thought it was just gas pains. But as far as the incisions and everything I will say the recovery and pain level was pretty much the same. They make roughly the same number/length of incisions if they're both done lapryscopically like mine were.

Ok gallbladder surgery is better than this one. The soreness is more when you get a lap band

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
