hopeo71 22 Posted April 28, 2012 My surgery is scheduled for this Wednesday. I go to my final pre-op dr appointment on Monday and I'm still not down the 5 freaking pounds I need to be! I'm self pay and so scare they will reschedule my surgery. Has anyone ever had this happen?
running_scared 125 Posted April 28, 2012 How long have you been on the pre-op diet? Have you been drinking salty things? Maybe try and drink as much Water as possible over the weekend, and see if you can weigh less on Monday.
NWgirl 574 Posted April 28, 2012 What kind of pre-op have you been on? shakes or low-fat? I would do complete liquids if you are required to lose weight before they will operate.
Sojourner 2,446 Posted April 28, 2012 My surgery is scheduled for this Wednesday. I go to my final pre-op dr appointment on Monday and I'm still not down the 5 freaking pounds I need to be! I'm self pay and so scare they will reschedule my surgery. Has anyone ever had this happen? Yes, I have heard of this happening...my surgeon was very specific about the compliance with this requirement. I had to loose 6 pounds in 3 weeks, just after comming back from a cruise. There are medical reasons your doctor sets a number he/she wants your weight at...exercise to burn some additional calories in a responsible manner, limit your salt intake, and comply 100% with your pre-op diet. That's what worked for me... Good luck!
Megan92877 7 Posted April 28, 2012 Did they give you a pre-op diet? I had to do 15 days of shakes and liquids only...wasn't fun, but I lost 12 pounds doing it....can you go to a Vitamin store and get a Protein based shake mix and try it for a few days? 4/6 shakes a day and some movement should get those 5 pounds off fast
hopeo71 22 Posted April 28, 2012 Yes, I'm to do 2 Protein shakes and sensible dinner. Unlimited diet soda Water ss Jello. I have to admit I have been doing one shake a day a dinner as I'm eating Breakfast late. I have had a few snackings such s a handful of roasted sunflower seeds and yes once I did have about a 1/4 cup of rice. I have not had sweetsop carbs. I have some Keto sticks and have checked my urine and they show small ketones. Maybe I'm not eating enough but im scared cause when I did have another shake my weight went up. I just can't get the last 2 lbs off.
NWgirl 574 Posted April 28, 2012 I would recommend full liquids.
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! 12,703 Posted April 28, 2012 The biggest reason surgeons require a pre-op weight loss to help lessen the risk of complications during surgery and to shrink the liver. The liver of obese people is very enlarged and fatty, and in order to access the stomach for Lap-Band surgery they need to be able to work around the liver. If it's all fatty and enlarged, not only does it make it extremely difficult to access the stomach but it also raises the risk of accidental injury to the liver during surgery. The good news is, the liver is one of the very first places we lose weight, and when we lose weight it shrinks. This is the biggest reason for pre-op diets and why it's so important to stick to them. I agree with stephyanders, I'd go to a full liquid diet between now and when you weigh in if you want to lose those last couple pounds.
hopeo71 22 Posted April 28, 2012 Ok I will try that. I didn't even eat dinner cause I'm so nervous. So I will make a shake. I feel like such a failure already and I haven't even been banded yet.
hopeo71 22 Posted April 29, 2012 Thanks for all the replays. I have stuck to liquids and the shakes since yesterday and I'm at the weight I need to be. Let's just hope that it stays there until 10am tomorrow. Hopefully the scale at the doctors takes into account for clothing weight!

Make sure to give your body time to flush out any liquids before your weigh in. IE don't drink a large coffee right before you walk in. That will add 2 pounds Water weight easy. jmschoc 7 Posted April 30, 2012 I was talking to my nutritionist Friday and this subject came up i was supposed to lose 25 lbs pre op and have lost 20 so far i asked about the other 5 and she told me my surgeon would not cancel or reschedule over 5 lbs i to am self pay. So i wouldnt worry just try not to gain i think they want an honest effort to show you posess the skills to lose for the long turn. And yes some of the weight lose is needed to shrink the liver.
