Newbie Here - Hello!

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to introduce myself! I'm Tara, I live in Utah and I'm looking forward to surgery. I haven't yet found a surgeon as I'm currently saving but hope to have the funds before the year is out. Disappointed my insurance doesn't cover WLS as I desperately need it but trying to just get over it and take care of myself.

My BMI is 46 and it's been a full 10 years or more I've been this obese - ever since my first child. I can't wait to get to know the rest of you here and so grateful to have found this board!

Also, I do CrossFit and it's the hardest thing I've ever done but I've been at it nearly a year (about 3 days a week) and I feel healthy and strong except for my weight so there's that ;)

Nice to "meet" you as well...and good to read that you are being proactive to improve your health through weight loss.

There are many knowledgeable and supportive participants on this forum...come back often...

I was self pay also, but I'm in Ontario, Canada and it's not covered here at all. Definitely makes it more challenging, but I think it was worth it. Have you looked into Mexico? Many people have gone there (search the threads for the good docs there) and I believe total cost with flights is about $5000. I don't think that covers after care at all, so that would be something to consider but it would definitely help with the costs!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
