Hospital Stay..how Long???

Recommended Posts

Hey I haven't been banded yet. My Bday will be May 2nd so one week left. I was actually just wondering if anyone else had to stay in the hospital for a day or more. My hospital doesnt do outpatient so I will be there from Wednesday at 6am to Thursday evening maybe Friday morning I was told. Did anyone else have to do that and if so how was your experience?

I was overnight and glad of it for the pain relief and having people taking care of me. Enjoy whatever care you can get now - you will appreciate it later. But not to scare you - it really wasn't that bad, compared to giving birth or breaking a bone!

I was out as soon as I could stand on my own. I wound up back at the hospital for more pain meds 2 days later, so I kind of wish that I had stayed overnight.

I was in at 6am and home by noon, I did fine, but I agree, STAY and enjoy the pampering. I would have loved it, I did it all myself, with a little help from my daughter in law.

BTW I felt worse the next day, so enjoy your stay!!!

I didn't stay overnight I made sure I would be out the same day only becuz Im a single mom to a 2y/o little boy so I needed to get home. But i stayed in the hospital all day 1pm-9pm. They were so sweet and so attending. Your 1st day will be ok it's the 2nd and 3rd where you will be relying on meds more. But trust me it gets better. Just stick to what your dr tells you for your after care and you will be great. Congrats on getting banded!!!

I stayed overnight. My surgeon has his patients do a swallow study the following morning after surgery, where u drink something in front of an xray machine to make sure band is in place, and there are no leaks, or issues. So i was glad for that!

My surgery got delayed after I got to the hospital. It started at like 4:30 and took like 1.5 hours. I stayed overnight and was discharged by 12:00. My doctor said if I got a "blood Pool" at the port site I would have to stay longer (I had been on blood thinners before surgery). I did not and as I said went home the next day.

My surgery was at 8am on a Monday morning. That first day after waking up was horrible. I could barely keep liquids down. It would cause me to dry heave after drinking just 1 oz. of broth. I was kept overnight and had to keep my liquid Breakfast down before I was allowed to leave the next day. I was discharged around lunch time the next day. At home, the worst part was trying to sit down and then standing up. Once I was down, I felt fine, but the sitting and standing felt like pulling in my stomach. I used the pain meds they prescribed for the first 2 days at home and then I was okay without them. Soreness completely left by the end of the week.

I came in at 6am on Monday and left before noon the next day, so glad.. I didn't get any of my medications that were oral for that whole time! They considered that outpatient, I guess because it was less than 24 hours.

I was in for 2 days. It takes me a long time to recovery from anesthesia. I slept most of my first post op day, and didn't do enough coughing and deep breathing. My Dr was concerned about pneumonia so I had to stay an extra night for antibiotics.i also had to do a swallowing study in front of the X-ray before I left. I was able to eat Clear Liquids fine, and didn't have much pain at all, I just had a really hard time trying to stay awake.

Sx at 730am, discharged next day at 10am. Worst part was the gas pain from inflating your abdomen. I wasn't really able to eat anything during that entire time except for a bite of Jello and 1/4 of a cup of tea. Advice- get all of the post op prescriptions filled and have them at home before your surgery. That way you won't have to wait for them after being discharged. Also, be prepared to have a pillow or something to cushion your abdomen from the seat belt. The bumps are rough. I would also make sure your going home clothes are easy to put on as well as your shoes so you don't have to bend over too much. Take advantage of walking around the hospital floor you are on. that helps with the pain.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
